I'm assuming that if we were in a war with a country with satellites, such as China, then a targeting system would exist that would enable a vessel to be hit by a missile(s) launched from any site, including the mainland.
Of course, this now gets into counter-satellite defense, which I know that China has and has tested. Im sure that we must have it as well. But it would have to work very well to eliminate the chance of a highly accurate missile attack that could come from anywhere within the range of the missile.
I was reading over the weekend about how the testing for the EMALS are coming along excellent at the Lakehurst Test Facility as it's hard to believe that they couldn't have used this technology sooner. Hell we even phased out the steam turbin Adams Class with the Spruance class LM2500 gas props back in the 80's as steam was just an old and highly dangerous technology that was past it's time when Reagan along with my fave DOD Chief Weinberger came into power during the early 80's.
Anyway i envy all the Aviation Boatswain Mate's up on the flight deck's
Hey 6 Foot...that's good to hear.....and I agree....amusement parks have been doing the same thing for decades.
I've read posters mentioning laser systems as missile interceptors...I've occasionally heard rumors that such systems are planned for this generation of aircraft carriers but I have not read anything about it as of yet. Makes sense to me.....with an infinite magazine and these new ships put out at least 3 times the electrical power of the Nimitz Class Carriers.

Well there's alot of laser testing going on at White Sands Missile Range in Southern New Mexico and i'm always hearing about how they are shooting down drones etc. from hovering satellites as i really believe that DOD already has some ''star wars'' technology that will make us all drool (or be paranoid) in the coming near future.
Anyway like my personal navy motto says ''Once a squid always a squid'' .
can these be used to knock out chinas hyper-missile?
Sounds like the stuff i read about what's being tested at White Sands Missile Range in Southern New Mexico. In the early 2000's we'd hear about the laser tests failed to hit and/or destroy it's target however over the last several years now we hear quite a bit about them being successful.
I love that movie too....but I would edit out all the "love" scenes; cut at least an hour out of movie and make it more of a docudrama based on facts only. Except I'd keep the father/son aspect of the film, because it added interest and different generational viewpoints to the film. .
That's typical of Hollywood, they did the same thing with Pearl Harbor when they put in a romance/drama in there with fictional characters and a made up soap opera type love story.

but will they be as effective against a missile going mach 10?
