There's been a proliferation worldwide of stealthy SSKs though and I don't think it's wise to underestimate the threat. Also, more and more likely war-zones are right off coastlines (Taiwan, Middle East) where potential enemies (China, cough cough) have more than enough cruise missiles to penetrate Aegis.

Thankfully I'm not the one who's paid to worry about this stuff though! I'm sure our Naval commanders would never bring them within range of the missiles-it's those quiet subs that are the wild card.

I won't argue with that ... however during a nuke war i'm sure nothing ''topside'' will survive. We always knew that the only vessels to survive a nuke war was the SSN's and SSBN's however they would have nothing to return too and i would assume starve to death once their provisions had run out as all food would be contaminated on land and in sea.

Yeah I've wondered what it would be like to surface your sub and find out that mankind has been wiped out...I think there was a movie made about it and they died of radiation poisoning after opening the hatch. Can't think of the name

Of course if the nuke war was only tactical then those subs would be the most valuable assets in the world. They could still be sunk with nuclear tipped torpedoes or even nuclear depth charges but their chances beat the hell out of those of a carrier battle group! I'll give credit to the CBG though, they're purposefully spaced far enough apart that it would basically take as many tactical nukes as there are targets to destroy the group. Unless the enemy uses a 50 megaton tzar bomba lol.

ROFLMAO.....the word is WASTE.....and a carrier costs approximately 3.5 Billion dollars to build and another Billion dollars to outfit with a full compliment of aircraft.( And here I thought they came in Cracker Jack boxes)..

Noone disputes that ANY military(or otherwise) target can be taken out with Nuclear weapons.....that's a given. So by your convoluted logic we should "close down" the U.S.A. because we are vulnerable to a nuclear attack..
