I never noticed this thread. It is cool to see interest in the new Ford class carrier. Our company builds these carriers. I dont walk by the dry dock where the Ford is being built everyday in the shipyard, but whenever I do, theres a ton of progress on the hull every time I see it.

I don't know if this was mentioned in the past 11 pages, but the EMALS is working now.

Thanx for the link....I have not checked it yet but theoretically I assume IF they can be aimed accurately AND fast enough; than they could disable and/or destroy the new class of hypersonic missiles.....but now we have super cavitating torpedoes to content with as well.

Construction on the first ship in the series was begun in 2007 and is scheduled for completion in 2015.

This class features 14 new design features; foremost of which is electromagnetic aircraft launching systems, which will replace the current steam catapult launching system. Also advanced arresting gear to assist in aircraft landings, a redesigned nuclear reactor, stealthier features and improved self defense as well as other advancements. It's designation will be CVN 78.

I would expect a ship named for Gerald Ford to be constantly running into the piers, running aground, sort of a huge mechanical klutz...

Why name them for Presidents anyway? What's wrong with naming them for guys like Butch O'Hare, for example?

I agree here as they should have been named after our badass Admirals throughout the USA history. Anyway we associated (current or vet) with the Navy and military are the superior Americans

I agree with you both......let's not jinx a new class of carrier by naming it after a "balance challenged" president......OR any president for that matter(the last two were named after Bush and Reagan).

I prefer Enterprise...or Invincible or Intrepid or Valiant etc......it becomes too politically charged using presidents.......especially with Bush still alive. Has a ship ever been named for a living president in the past?????? Anyone know?????

First off I apoligize for being off subject but with Carriers named after presidents, I noticed Subs named after cities and states, Is thier a distinction between the two? Attack subs for cities and Boomers for States maybee? What about the naming of other war ships Destroyers and Cruisers?

Here's some more links.......I just realized that the total crew numbers for this new Class of aircraft carriers will be roughly half of the previous Nimitz Class.
