But I am noticing newer Flying J's and Pilots and even a Petro along my route that feel more modern and much cleaner than the older established Loves, I am starting to prefer those in my more recent trips. Bucees is non existent along my West Texas route IH10, there is a billboard West of SA announcing one coming up, but it's East of San Antonio and I rarely drive beyond that.

Another Texas brand that still feels pretty Texan despite expanding to other Southern states is Academy Sports and Out Doors. It might be because they seem to embrace outdoor hunting and fishing culture alot more than the other large sporting good store, Dicks. It's probably more pronounced in recent years that Dicks stopped selling firearms altogether.

The Dick’s near me in NY sells guns. Handguns, shotguns, rifles, even semiauto rifles and shotguns - just no ARs.

Anywho, nah. Bucee’s was never that lovely. Lots of overpriced swag, though as road food goes it’s pretty darn good, and reliably so.

Academy is already expanding to the Midwest and Northeast. Not just other southern states.

Dicks stopped selling guns in some locations, but there seems to be a misconception that they stopped as a whole.

I read a while back that fewer than 15% of Dick's stores sell any firearms or ammunition and those that do only sell hunting specific arms and ammo with a total 10-15 stores selling a more broad array of arms.

I must have assumed it was 100% across the board with Dick's being that the locations near my place in Texas don't sell firearms.

Those BBQ sandwiches are really good for roadside food. But by gaw, expensive for a brisket sandwich even before inflation.

For God's sake. It's a gas station.

As I've noted before, for reasons I won't disclose here, I refuse to patronize Buc-ee's. Nevertheless, I give them credit for noticing the overpowering craving that women have for clean restrooms out on the road and the lack of venues that satisfied that craving. That alone made them notable (and was the foundation of their success).

I’m no gun enthusiast, but I would imagine that local gun shops are a better place to buy guns than big box stores.
