Travel is overrated. People are just fooled by travel industry marketing people.

A few travel truisms some folks believe but I don’t:

—getting off the beaten path is always better than seeing the traditional guidebook sights. My experience suggests the traditional travel book attractions are popular for a good reason. I always include them.

—the big cliched tourist cities (Paris, London, Rome, New York) should always be avoided in favor of little obscure towns.

—it’s preferable to just let your whims carry you and not plan your vacations. That’s some people’s style, but it sure isn’t mine.

I think this depends on what’s important to you. In the US, train travel is usually far more pleasant than bus travel. But with a few exceptions, US trains are chronically late, sometimes by several hours, while buses tend to be on time more often.

All 50 U.S. states have picturesque scenery, interesting history and yummy food, and all are worth visiting and experiencing in depth.

Depends also on the nature of the trip, and what country.

If I'm going from Bangkok to Nong Khai and take the night bus it'll be okay for a bus but still a chair that reclines only so much while the chair in front of me is reclined into my lap. When I finally do fall asleep it'll be time to stop for the middle of the night break at some giant gas station with a million buses and people hawking food.

Same trip on the sleeper train and I've got a berth to lay down in and the steady sounds of the train actually make it much easier for me to sleep. If hungry can walk over to the food car and buy some instant noodles or a beer. Train is far better experience in this case.

For transport inside a city, yes. You get to see your surroundings and make unplanned stops at will if you see something interesting. Whereas underground train makes me feel like a gopher.

i agree , i never drive any where i can fly .

i have been delayed hours in airports for a 1 hour flight . i still prefer flying .

last trip from washington dc to nyc they could have taxied the plane down i-95 and i would have been home faster than the storm delays we had

My most unpopular travel opinion is that I refuse to check luggage on the outbound flight. Carry on only, regardless of length of trip or destination. Drives people nuts that they can't figure out how to do it.

It's also one of my most admired travel rules.
