Big fluffy snow flakes for most of the time today and the next 2-3 days. With occasional breaks of just clouds, without snowfall.

High temps weere overnight. Been dropping since. 30s midday here now. Thats normal low.
Accumulations of sleet? Erm, no offence but sleet is almost like rain and rain does not accumulate, at least not like snow. Snow doesn't even accumulate when its above 0c either...

WBZ Boston Weather

1/4" of ice pellets covering the ground at Gardner. Tricky travel in areas well northwest & north of Boston.
What even are Ice Pellets, those things? I've never seen those things in my life. Its snowed here quite alot this winter and we've had everything from Sleet, Hail, Graupel, Snizzle to Snow. But never have I seen those things.

It seems to be a rare weather type that only seems to occur in America and Canada. What is it? Is it like frozen droplets of rain? I'm totally confused. I can see how that could happen.
I just can't see it happening that way in that pic usually if its above 0c aloft and below 0c here we usually get it like this:

1. Freezing rain.
2. Hail.
3. Graupel.

Very raw day here. Only in the low 40s with a brisk breeze. Not raining at the moment, but the pavement is wet. Lovely weather.

Sleet is nothing like rain and it can accumulate, albeit very slowly and it usually doesn't amount to much. Snow can accumulate above 0 C too.

No sleet is like rain. Sleet practically is rain.

Sleet = Rain with flakes of snow in it. Or rain with blobs of ice inside.

I think we had this discussion a while back. Different definitions between the UK and US. Sleet in the US = ice pellets.

Yes but what are ice pellets? I've never seen such a thing in my life?

Is it hail stones?

I see

We have a difference of definitions,

Here:

Sleet is frozen rain drops. Like hail but in the winter time some can be large like hail

Mixed is when you ge snow flakes and rain drops falling at the same time

Freezing Rain- Falls as liquid drops but freezes instantly when hitting an object. Can make solid layers of ice that can be several inches deep. the weight often breaks down tree branches.

Yeah pretty much like hail, though they're tiny. Is "sleet" (or ice pellets or hail) really uncommon in the UK during the winter? That would really surprise me if it were. Seems like you would be just as prone to it considering winters are cool enough there to support it.
