34. Swift-Daley House And Ranlett Tool Museum

Description: Built in 1741 by Joshua Knowles, this bow-roofed home has wide floorboards, a minister’s cupboard, original wainscoting, and an 8-foot-wide fireplace. The house once belonged to Nathaniel Swift, one of the principals of the Swift Meat Packing Company. It is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in July and Aug, and on Sat from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Sept. The Ranlett Tool Museum behind the Swift-Daley House has a display that includes numerous tools and implements collected in the area, including remnants of saltworks and cranberry-growing operations. The hours are the same as those for the Swift-Daley House. Admission to both is free.

Description: A turn-of-the-20th-century hotel (built in 1907) houses the Truro Historical Society’s collections. These include Native American artifacts, items dating from the 17th century, lifesaving equipment, 17th-century weaponry, antique fishing and whaling equipment, household items, shipwreck items, Sandwich glass, historic photographs, and a pirate’s chest! The museum is open June through September, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mon through Sat and Sun from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $4; children younger than 12 are admitted free. The museum is just a stone’s throw from the Highland Lighthouse and can be toured in tandem with it for an additional $2.

Description: Take a break from sightseeing and indulge in a few sips of local wine. Tour the vineyard, which thrives on the Cape’s sandy soils and temperate breezes, and the winery. Tastings remain casual affairs, but they are now held under the vineyard’s new “tasting pavillion” behind the lovely 1830s farmhouse, which houses the gift shop. It carries their wines, as well as cooking oils, marinades, jams, and all the wine accoutrements you could ever need. Open daily during the season, weekends in Apr and Dec. Description: Fishing around to do something really different? Adults and kids alike will enjoy the Sandwich Fish Hatchery, where more than half a million fish are raised to stock the state’s various ponds. Kids will be able to track the stages of fish development and feed the critters (bring quarters!). Admission is free. It’s open year-round, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

Description: From mid-June through July the Brewster Whitecaps team sponsors weeklong clinics. Kids learn everything from how to bunt to how to hit a home run. Open to children ages 6 to 13, the clinics meet at Cape Cod Regional Technical School field, the home field for the Brewster Whitecaps. Cost is $65 for the first week (subtract $5 per week thereafter).

Description: Kids who are avid about nature will appreciate the Natural History Day Camp Programs at this Massachusetts Audubon site. The activities are calibrated to different ages, but they all have an intense focus on animals and their habitats. Each week focuses on different marine or animal life, their habitats, and the children’s exploring and observing skills. Younger kids learn about animal tracks, older kids go on canoe trips and snorkel in Cape Cod Bay. The camp runs from mid-June through Aug for children in preschool programs through grade eight.

As you travel the length of the 7-mile canal, you may pass tankers, sailing yachts, fishing boats, or plush cruise ships. A division of Hy-Line, Cape Cod Canal Cruises offers trips daily in summer, departing from Onset Pier in Onset. You’ll see the Kennedy Compound in Hyannisport as well as Squaw Island, Great Island, the Hyannis Yacht Club, and Point Gammon Lighthouse. Depending on the season, the schedule includes four to 17 trips a day between mid-Apr and late Oct. Description: This 73-foot vessel, which boasts 2,230 square feet of sail, will take you on a two-hour jaunt across Provincetown Harbor and into Cape Cod Bay. Choose from morning, afternoon, and sunset sails, priced at $20 ($12 for children) in the daytime and $25 ($12 for children) at dusk. Sailing times are 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m., and sunset. The schooner sails daily from mid-May to late Oct; reservations are recommended.
