Description: The views from the restaurant’s open porch are incredible, courtesy of the Cliffs of Aquinnah and the ancient glaciers that created them. An Aquinnah landmark since 1949, the Aquinnah features plenty of great seafood and plenty of crowds. Patrons are offered both inside and outside seating with take-out windows catering to those sitting outdoors to enjoy the awesome views. You can also buy clams and scallops by the pint and quart. The Aquinnah serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner while it’s open from May to mid-Oct.

Description: This is the island’s oldest year-round theater company, presenting original plays as well as musicals and dramas. The group presents several shows a year at various venues. They also offer classes for children and adults. It is associated with the Young Director’s Studio, Apprentice Players, the Theatre Guild, Family Classics Theatre, and Children’s Theatre.

Description: Music fans will appreciate the free Sunday night summer concerts alternately given at Owen Park off Main Street in Vineyard Haven and at the gazebo in Ocean Park on Seaview Avenue in Oak Bluffs. The events are quite festive and, as you lie back on your blanket, the music provides the starry night sky with a soundtrack.

Description: Summer Shakespeare takes the stage at the natural Tisbury amphitheater every Wed through Sat at 5 p.m. from mid-July through mid-Aug. Call for ticket prices. Tickets are sold at the amphitheater before shows, and they accept cash only. A helpful hint: It’s Shakespeare outdoors, so you may want to bring along a blanket and some mosquito repellent.

Description: The Vineyard Playhouse is a nonprofit community center professional theater that puts on shows throughout the year. Tickets cost anywhere from $20 to $35 during the summer season. The Playhouse offers educational programs for both adults and children as well as children’s shows, staged on summer Saturdays at Tisbury Amphitheater, with tickets around $6. The Playhouse stages about four different presentations (not including their outdoor Shakespeare selection) each summer, between mid-June and early Sept.

Description: This is a club for the under-30 crowd. Eclectic live bands and DJs pack the dance floor in season for a modest cover charge (free to $10). The Lampost is open from Apr to Oct.

Description: This hot spot is next to the Island Inn on the Beach Road on your way to Edgartown (or if you’re coming from Edgartown, it’s on your way to Oak Bluffs). It’s jazz, blues, funk, soul, R&B, and the occasional DJ every night in July and Aug and weekends in the shoulder seasons (Apr through June and Sept through Oct). Look to their Web site for a calendar of entertainment. Lola’s is open year-round.

Description: The Tabernacle on the campgrounds in Oak Bluffs often hosts free band concerts and shows by big-name performers. Also, if you like sing-alongs, tune up your vocal chords and set aside an evening or two for communal music making. Every Wed at 8 p.m. in season, the Tabernacle hosts a community sing-along. A songbook is provided for a small donation.

Description: The Old Whaling Church is often used for live performances. The day we stopped by, there was a concert by the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society. Performers such as Livingston Taylor visit regularly.
