The service does not handle vacation rentals, but if you are looking for a room on the island, this is the number to call. About 95 percent of the islands’ inns and hotels work with this service. Although the sooner you book the better, especially for a room in season, the inns and hotels on the island regularly notify the service of cancellations, making this one of the first numbers to call if you are throwing together plans at the last minute. You pay no fee for the service.

Description: Behind a row of large hedges hides the Hanover House, a cozy, quiet bed-and-breakfast inn located just steps from the harbor. This village inn offers 16 well maintained rooms, each with private bath, two double beds or a queen- or king-size bed, air-conditioning, Internet access, and cable TV. Many of the rooms feature entrances that open onto one of two spacious sundecks. In a separate carriage house are three suites, two of which have full kitchens. Each suite has a private deck or patio. Complimentary breakfast includes homemade waffles, egg dishes, and potatoes and fresh-ground gourmet coffee. Hanover House is open year-round.

Description: This Victorian inn is painted a combination of cream, pink, and soft pastel blue, as are the chairs that line its front porch. With its second-floor wraparound balcony and its proximity to the harbor, the place has a riverboat feel to it. It’s hard to believe that this beauty, with architecture pointing to the mid- to late-19th century, was actually built in 1989. All 22 of the Dockside Inn’s rooms have air-conditioning, private baths, and cable TV with VCRs; most rooms have queen-size beds. Five full kitchen suites are also available. The Dockside, convenient to all that Oak Bluffs has to offer, is open from mid-Apr to late Oct.

Description: You couldn’t ask for a better location: right across the street from the town beach on Vineyard Sound and within easy walking distance of all the sites in Oak Bluffs, including the community of gaily colored gingerbread cottages. It is also within a 5- to 10-minute walk of the ferry dock. This bed-and-breakfast is under new ownership. Where once there were nine rooms, there are now 11.

Description: The Madison Inn is just a short five-minute walk from the island ferry and an even shorter two-minute stroll to Oak Bluffs Town Beach. All of Oak Bluffs, from her fanciful gingerbread cottages to her Flying Horses Carousel, is just around the corner. Each of the inn’s 14 rooms is brightly decorated and includes a private bath, flat-screen TV, wireless Internet access, and individualized temperature control. Description: Like many of Edgartown’s inns, the Charlotte Inn began life as a sea captain’s home. Built in 1860, it is today one of the premier inns in Edgartown and on the island. Brick courtyards and flower beds accent the grounds. Inside English antiques, fine furnishings, and high ceilings convince you that you’re in a very special place.When the longtime in-house restaurant, L’Etoile, left for a new spot on North Water Street, the Inn replaced it with the equally elegant Terrace Restaurant, whose chef specializes in New England contemporary cuisine with a French accent. The Charlotte Inn welcomes children older than 14. It is open throughout the year.

Description: This lovely inn was built in 1840 for the town physician Dr. Clement Francis Shiverick. It offers 11 guest rooms, many with fireplaces, two of which are suites. The inn has been lovingly restored to evoke the period in which it was built. Enjoy a breakfast of breads, cakes, and freshly baked muffins in the garden room. Afterward stroll the grounds or lounge on the terrace. The Shiverick Inn, which is open year-round, welcomes children age 12 and older. Dogs are accommodated in certain guest rooms for a nightly surcharge of $25.

Description: Directly across the street from the famous Edgartown Pagoda Tree is the Victorian Inn, built ca. 1820 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. All 14 guest rooms have private baths and are decorated with antiques and flowers. A number of rooms have four-poster beds, and some have balconies. Some rooms overlook the historic harbor, whereas others overlook the English garden below, where a complimentary gourmet breakfast is served. An informal tea is also served in the afternoon. Children 8 and older are welcome at the inn, and from Nov to Apr pets are allowed. The inn is open year-round.

Description: At nearly land’s end lies the Duck Inn, with incredible views of the Aquinnah Cliffs and Lighthouse. To get to this cozy five-room, 200-year-old farmhouse, you must take a dirt road. The decor varies from Southwest to Japanese. The Southwest room has pink stucco walls, and the Japanese room is filled with silks. All rooms but the detached cabin (attached by a glass breezeway) have private baths. The cabin’s bath is not connected to the room. A ground level suite features a fireplace, and all guests have access to the hot tub and two house cats. Miles and miles of the most secluded beaches lie outside the door. Duck Inn is open all year long, and children are welcome. Pets are welcome during the summer.
