I'll take our "chaos" in the USA any day. But if it works for them and they're happy more power to them. Sorry have never been a fan of authoritarianism I don't mince my words or bite my tongue because it might offend someone.

Actually drinking in public is quite common among countries all over the world, America is just a bit weird in that sense.
And you can literally download movies for free or stream them for free everywhere. No cop is gonna break into your house just because you get the seed of An Affair to Remember from torrent. Mass producing them might get you in trouble, but everyone downloads movies or tv shows, not just in China.
Smoking in restaurants.....now that's the kind of freedom I'm willing to sacrifice, and would love to see others being deprived of it.

The reason is Asians do not as much alcoholic problems as Westerners. In Asia, Asians think westerners cannot live without alcohol.
People in China are generally not law abiding with minor matters.

Chinese cities are increasing banning smoking in restaurants now. A policy they are copying from richer countries.
Downloading movies for free may not be available in the future if China copies the laws and policies from richer countries.

If you are not a famous person or from some anti-government organization, nothing serious will happen. But your words won't appear on any media. In fact, politically sensitive posts can be found online, but they are deleted fast.
If you are an important figure or keep doing so for a long time, there may be serious consequences.

These are actually either institutional or cultural flaws that illustrate China's less evolved society and political institutions. Laws and the concept of private space and public well being are just not understood or respected. This is not something to be proud of, my friend.

Ok, so drinking and getting drunk and obnoxious in public is a great "freedom"? And smoking and killing non-smokers in the same restaurant with your dirty second hand smoke is good? And downloading movies for free...otherwise known as stealing movies, is good? These are not good things. They are manifestation of very poor institutional safeguards and primitive social development. There are Chinese laws against all these things, but of course people don't respect the laws. This is a huge problem for China.
Their animal rights record is atrocious, even by third world standard. They even starve tigers and use their bones for nonsensical, bogus health means.
