You're one of those new people, right? Maybe you need to ask yourself why you wanted to move back here so badly. It's obviously a bad fit for you.

scongress1234, are you trapped in Austin or something? Based on your postings ad infinitum on how mediocre Austin is, why on earth are you living here? Life's too short to live somewhere that you clearly don't particularly care for if you don't absolutely have to.

Again, I've responded to the same thing in another area....love it or leave it is a knee-jerk responce that is a cop out from addressing issues. The Chronicle is the only paper with biting questions about the same, and they get the same responses...."Why don't you leave, you seem to hate it?".....thats not going to solve anything.....I'd rather stay, and change everything I can. Why leave? I'd rather stay, be a gadfly to the max to the entire metro, write letters to the chron for days, join and establish organizations against the way wrongheaded growth patterns, and the same...and, if you haven't guessed it, I do actively discourage growth, on here, and everywhere, as it is simply from greed and lack of public input....
Thats why I stay and rant......
Anyone want to really meet in person and change anything?
Somehow, I doubt it, at least on this growth-friendly board.

Nothings wrong with growth, as long as it's done right and responsibly. And Kudos to you because you aren't just blowing hot air. Actually, I have stood in front of the capital in protest before.

What three things would you change first, and what would be the benefit of the change?

I have a question for you...
Why do you give new people such a hard time about relocating to Austin when you, yourself are a "transplant"? Just curious about that...

Ok, I've been here for 3 years; I still love it and can't think of anywhere else I'd want to live at this stage of my life.
I moved here from Manhattan but grew up in the suburbs on Long Island. One of the 75 reasons that I wanted to leave NY was that it was becoming just like anywhere else (sound familiar?). Once they opened a Best Buy on Broadway in the Village, I knew it was time to pack my bags.
The only things I can complain about are:
-The wind. It's too windy here. Nothing anyone can do about that.
-I've found the drivers to be OK for the most part; my only beef is that nobody, nobody uses their turn signals. Is it that hard?
-The traffic lights here take forever to change!
-The police are ticket happy. I guess there's no real crime to fight? They never heard of a warning it seems. I don't speed anymore.
-Alot of stores close at 1PM on Saturday. It's hard to get stuff done on the weekends because of this. I understand and appreciate the reason why they close, though.
The traffic is ok as far as my commute goes. I rarely get angry on my 14 mi. commute. Except for the non-signaling folks. Rush hour is 20 hrs. a day in NY.
I vowed to never complain about the heat so I won't. It's pointless. The food here is ok, you just have to dig to find the good stuff.

What stores do you go to that close at 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays?

The paint store in Westlake
The plumbing supply shop on Burnet (it's a big one though I don't recall the name)
A granite supply shop (somewhere near my house, wife went once and wasted a trip there)
I try to support the local retailers but they make it difficult.

It is hard to signal when one hand is hold the cell phone and the other is adjusting the radio.
