On the other hand - in the market place... he is subject to the reactions and feelings of his customers. They know how he feels. The customers (tickets, clothing, TV advertisers, etc.) have the choice of whether or not they want to buy what he is selling and put money in his pocket.

So what is the higher priority for the customers - race ethics, or entertainment?

The players are different since they are employees. If this was FedEx, or Hostess where people make $20/hr - they would be on strike yesterday. Which says race relations is more valuable than $20/hr. Now we are talking millions of dollars and championships and fame and fortune. How valuable is race relations now? Is it worth all of that to go on strike and not play? Apparently not to the players. What they want to do is get their money, fame, and fortune while at the same time punishing their boss. It's an interesting dynamic that will play itself out.

And what would REALLY be interesting - is if they won the NBA championship. How would that play out with the whole trophy presentation?

Los Angeles Clippers lose Carmax sponsorship

On Monday morning, Carmax has announced that they will no longer be associating with the Clippers organization because of Sterling’s comments, which will end a nine-year relationship with the team.

To me - this is how you deal with racism. He is free to make the comments... others are free to chose if they want to do business with him. State Farm may end up terminating Cliff Paul.

The League has guidelines regarding behavior, actions and words that are detrimental to the image of the NBA (hard to believe).

You can try to play defense attorney and say the recording were obtained illegally, or try to excuse his words by saying they were out of context or only semi-racist. Sterling is an idiot and there is no way the NBA can keep him when he has offended the likes of Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan and Lebron and his own team . . . Stick a fork in the old guy, he's done.

I saw that he bought the team for 12.5M and they are now worth something like 700M. Seems like a win-win for Sterling. The only thing to keep him around is if he enjoys to legal battle (he is a lawyer after all).

Lets forget that Sterling is rich for a second. If a black player made a similar comment during a private conversation - what do you think would happen? Would the player be forced out of the NBA?

State Farm Pulls Sponsorship From Clippers In Wake Of Sterling Remarks

According to The Big Lead, Steve Stoute, the CEO of a marketing firm with State Farm as a client, went on ESPN radio host Colin Cowherd’s morning show on Monday and announced that he is advising clients associated with the Clippers to pull their sponsorship of the team.

“State Farm is pulling out, and other brands are pulling out,” Stoute told Cowherd. “We’re going to start seeing it over the next 48 hours.”

Q44 - I don't think anyone here is excusing WHAT he thinks. We are just not seeing that in a vacuum... at least I am not.

Great question! Someone called on Mike and Mike this morning with the comment that players (white/black/hispanic) beat their girlfriends, commit assault, rape, do drugs, get caught with loaded firearms..but the outrage and media coverage is a lot less intense and eventually they are allowed back on the team.

Some old 80 yr old white guy who most of us didn't even know existed makes a statement in private and we are outraged??? i don't agree with his statement or his views, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Has it gotten to a point now that you have to be an equal opportunist for who you decided to hang out with? The guy can tell his girl that he'd prefer her not to bring a certain demographic to his workplace...afterall, he was providing her with an apartment, a Lamborghini, a pretty hefty allowance, courtside tickets to Clippers games and access to a suite at Clipper games...at least the old man didn't use the n-word in his privately recorded, personal conversation (at least give him some credit).......this is definitely being blown out of proportion...... he should soon be owning TMZ for their use of a taped private conversation obtained illegally. Hope he has his lawyers working on that as well as tossing the ***** to the curbside.

We already know that the league lets players slide when they say something homophobic. The NFL is instituting a 15 yard penalty to curb the use of the N Word on the field because it's gotten out of hand. I'm sure that word has slipped out on an NBA court on a few occasions. Is the league fair? No. They'll pick and choose their fights depending on the marquee value of the person involved. In this case it's an unpopular owner. He'll be gone.

I agree and it's almost like a form of social/media bullying (another issue that we are supposedly against). If they don't like a person, they're held to a different standard and their life is made miserable when they mess up (i.e. bullying).

The NBA and media consider Kobe part of the in crowd so he gets a pass for calling someone a ****ot. On the other hand, Sterling is an old rich guy so he gets bullied if he says something prejudice. Make the rich white guy feel pain!!!

You are deflecting the conversation over and over, in an attempt to defend him and you have done this on multiple threads on this website, and I don't understand why you feel the need to continue to defend him. I can admit that perhaps in our sociey that there is an unevenness of how race relations is treated where someone white is generally treated far worse for what they do as opposed to what someone of another race does. However, that doesn't absolve him of his behavior. Even if there is a double standard, that doesn't mean he should get away with mistreating and disrespecting the league's clientele. That is what the conversation is. We can throw all of these scenarios out there and it still doesn't change what he said out of his mouth.
