Funny.

Have you tried a rain barrel? Yes, not much rain here but when it does...like a few days ago, the barrel could collect quite a bit of H2O for your garden. Also, add moisture-loving additives to your soil...or splurge for drip hoses?

It just doesn't or won't rain on my yard. Then of course there are the huge and I mean huge palmetto bugs that are spoiled rotten little brats, seems as soon as it gets a little hot outside they decide they want to enjoy my air conditioning . Nothing worse than sitting up late at night watching tele and having a monster straight out of your worst nightmare crawl across your foot, ah I ll have to edit the language here. Third Id have to say is overcoming the overwhelming dread of leaving the Island for anything, don't know where that came from, but I have gotten to the point of if i cant get it here I don't need it. Which of course SC retailers don't want to here that, since they seem to avoid james island like the plaque. One last one I know thats only four, but like i said there are so many things to like, but number 4 are the incredibly slow drivers, I admit I have a lead foot and enjoy driving the speed limit.

The nice thing about this area is that you can put in a shallow well for irrigation fairly cheap..

This place kills me with some of the crap that goes on ...
  1. The humidity ... back home I'm good to go in 115-degree heat ... but the humidity here puts a finishing combo on me that is nearly unbearable.
  2. No winter ... basically there is one cold week or two and then the other two seasons here are summer and HELL.
  3. The drivers ... If you draw a line from Billings, Montana to Washington, D.C., I've driven in every state south of that line and I have NEVER seen drivers as bad as they are here. And I've driven in cities like Denver, Albuquerque, Dallas/FTW, Oklahoma City, Atlanta etc etc.
  4. The gambling laws here are a joke ... The laws used to prosecute around here are antiquated at best. Under the current laws it's illegal for that judge/DA prosecuting to even own the deck of cards or the Yahtzee game he has at home. They've got a tax field ripe for harvesting and yet there isn't a casino to be seen.
  5. Fear of change and the hypocrisy of wanting to be the best, greatest and newest but not wanting to cut down a tree or build a road. "Give us a better traffic system so we arent sitting in a parking lot for hurricane evacuations .. just don't build 526" .... "Give us some nice new buildings and communities... just don't cut down those trees."

I actually find that the majority of the drivers here are pretty good compared to where I come from (Massachusetts). I am very rarely tailgated here, honked at, or given "the bird." I guess it depends on where you come from that determines how you view the drivers. I do have to admit that I think people should be required to take some sort of SUV driving class before owning an SUV here. A lot of SUV owners do not know how to park straight or stay in their own lane on East Bay Street.

I'm not the biggest fan of Charleston, but what about the drivers here bothers you so much? They drive really slow, and quite a few people have no idea what the fast lane is.. But other than that I can't really think of any other negative traits I see daily. " Trust me the slow drivers in the fast lane really gets under my skin"

But aggressive drivers are far n few between, don't have too much road rage going on here, for the most part people are decent will let you in etc. I've lived all over and driven through more than half the states. This area is far from the worst driving habit wise... People always think where they currently are, has the worst driver for some odd reason. Then again we all have different ideas on what bad driving is.

Yeah your not kidding, you North East drivers are a special breed all your own.

I think having Texas plates up there, made them even less patient with me.

  • People waiting until LITERALLY the last 50ft before getting into the right lane to make a right turn even though they KNEW the turn wass coming up.
  • People waiting until they are driving on the shoulder to merge even though the signage was 3/4 mile back.
  • People thinking that just because they have their turn signal on that it is YOUR responsibility to yield to them because they dont know what the triangle-shaped, red and white YIELD sign means.
  • People knowing they can get over two blocks ahead but just HAVE to get in front of that car in front of them so they slam on the gas so they can jet forward and cut people off.
  • People driving in the left lane while faster traffic has to go around them in the right lane.
  • People texting and talking on their cell phone instead of paying attention to where they are going then flipping YOU off because you honked at them when they drifted into your lane.
  • People using turning lanes as on-ramps and acceleration lanes.

I can go on if you like.
And no .. nowhere have I ever seen ANY OF THAT as bad as it is here.

One of my favorite things ever was someone born and raised here that told me their driver's ed teacher taught them to just stay in the lane that is merging .. someone will have to let you in when the lane ends. There's a right way and wrong way to merge ... and that isn't the right way, but it sure as heck explains a lot.

My second favorite traffic conversation ever is the time my wife and I were driving down Sam Rit and someone cut her off and as she honked at them said, "ALL THESE DANG YANKEES NEED TO LEARN HOW TO DRIVE! ! !" To which I politely replied, "Someone should tell that to the lady you honked at with the 'CAROLINA GIRLS ... BEST IN THE WORLD' sticker in her window."

You realize you're describing big city driving, any big city.....on a good day

I'd take the drivers down here to the MA, CT and NY drivers. I lived 40 years in that part of the country. Drivers here are bad at times, for sure, but they are far worse and aggressive up there, in my opinion. Of course, some of them moved down here and brought their lousy habits with them.

When I lived in Upstate SC, I rarely ever heard anyone honk their horn, but I've found it is more common here, unfortunately.
