Was the thief on the cross required to work to earn his salvation?
Who said anything about work to earn salvation? Practice reading comprehension, Finn. Try actually THINKING about what you read instead of reacting to what you EXPECT people to say.
1 Corinthians 1:18-24 - 18 For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, "I WILL DESTROY THE WISDOM OF THE WISE, AND THE CLEVERNESS OF THE CLEVER I WILL SET ASIDE." 20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness, 24 but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
The gospel is not logical with the human mindset. It is foolishness. It doesn't make sense that a dead person was raised up to new life.
It is not human reasoning, but divine revelation that gives us understanding of these things.

Then you should have read the entries leading up to that comment which were a clarification that making a commitment to the Way of life Jesus taught was NOT a "work of merit" just as making a confession of faith is not a work of merit. The body dies. The soul of both the believer and unbeliever survives the death of the body. However, the destination of the soul of the believer is different from that of the unbeliever. At the moment of physical death the believer goes to heaven awaiting the resurrection of the body. The unbeliever goes to hades where he also awaits the resurrection of the body. The time will come when all believers will be resurrected and live in the presence of God forever in the new earth and new heavens. The very moment a person believes in Christ he has eternal life. He enters into an eternal relationship with God. The time will come when the unbeliever will be sent to the lake of fire in resurrected body where he will exist forever in a state of spiritual separation from God.
