What purpose or reason would He have in doing such a despicable thing ?
God has great love, or He would not have allowed His Son to be tortured, beaten and crucified to give sinners a chance to enter into God's holiness and righteousness; it's a new and living way void of sin. This is God's love; it's all about holiness and righteousness.
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. - 1 Corinthians 2:9
If, however, God's love is ultimately rejected, then God will turn these sinners over to their own devices and they will see that God can hate as much as He loves; and that's a lot of hate.
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God - Hebrews 10:31
Proverbs 1
24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;
25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;
27 When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.
28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:
29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:
30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.
31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.
33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

There are those who believe in hell and use modern translations.

The only way a person can believe is if God gives them the faith.

Shibata replied:
Which he gives to everyone who hears the gospel. Whether they like it, or not, is up to them, of course.
That's the exegesis of hermeneutics, not the eisegesis of snipping sentences out of context.
Does He really? God gives faith to everyone who hears the gospel? Really? If that were the case we'd have more believers in the churches than unbelievers on the outside.

We have no unbelievers, except those who have not heard the gospel.
I have preached to many people who to this day still do not believe. Evidence does not back up what you say.
Everyone believes, who hears. Any preacher of the gospel knows that.
Many are called, but few are chosen, of course.
