So your criteria for influence are street gangs and sitcoms?

Street gangs is inner city influence but it's still influence when New York city streets are filled with L.A gangs.

Hollywood is more than sitcoms,The movie industry is huge of course from award shows to music.I think it's better to break this down by categories.

Food
Fashion
Art
Importance
Auto
Transportation
Sports
Music
Weather
Quality of life
Diversity
Global level
Urban culture ( hip hop,street gangs, graffitti,tattoos )
Housing
Celebrity
Media
Beautiful Women lol
Movies
Video games based on either city
Sitcoms based on either city
Social media
Parks
Museums

Yeah, people touting Hollywood have clearly never been there. Half of it is a ghost town and half of it is a ghetto dump. Hollywood and Highland is a joke of an outdoor mall. Outside of Santa Monica, which technically is an entirely different city, and The Grove, Los Mangeles is a garbage city.

Well, it was clearly NYC a decade ago and it's clearly NYC now. I suppose the big thing is that there's been a rise of several major metropolises within the US that have grown quite quickly (especially the Bay Area, DC/Baltimore, Houston, and DFW) so influence is probably more distributed among more cities in the US than it was a decade ago.

What makes NYC so hard to beat is that it's a city of 5 different counties combined as 1 city.Ive said it before and im saying it now.

How can Chicago or Philly compete with a juggernuat of 8 million ? Now if it was just Manhattan alone than the conversation would be very different.

Size means alot when your comparing economy, influence and CBD.That's why London & Tokyo are mega cities as well.Common sense.

Now even if it was just Manhattan alone,i still think Manhattan would come out on top but Chicago would have a higher population. The economy would be closer and overall things would match up quite better.

The easiest way to get around the confusion is by using urban / metro area. It's how people understand that Jacksonville is not really a more major city than Miami, Boston, DC, and San Francisco. It shouldn't be too difficult a concept.

Why would anyone intentionally move to NYC?

That's true but the NYC metro still includes other states.

Why not compare Manhattan by itself to other cities ?

How does that make more sense than just comparing the metro area? People and resources don't evaporate when you cross an arbitrary legal jurisdiction.
