I lived for 4 years in Cleveland Heights in the early 80's when I was really young. Right next to St. Louis School on Taylor, which as I understand is now closed. My memories are a little fractured because I was so young, but here are some of the things I remember:
1. Higbee's at Severance Center putting the giant Santa Claus on their roof.
2. Center Mayfield theater. Saw a lot of good movies there.
3. An ice cream store called "Lickety Splits" on Mayfield down toward South Euclid.
4. A FIAT dealership on Mayfield? Maybe I'm not remembering that right.
5. An old candy store called "Ruckerson's" or "Ruckason's" which I believe was on Monticello and Noble. Hope I'm remembering that right.
5. Swimming lessons at Denison park.
6. Summer festival at St. Louis Church.
7. Taking a walking field trip in kindergarten from Noble road school to the firehouse down the street.
8. A pizza place called Tony's which I believe was in that small strip of stores on Noble right next to the firehouse. There was also a Baskin Robbins next door and a Revco across the street.
9. Getting milkshakes at the Hillside dairy counter right by Noble school.
10. An old eagle mart right across the street from noble school.
11. An old Red Barn restaraunt which I can only remember was somewhere down Mayfield heading toward Lyndhurst. Anyone remember a red barn in that general area?
Anyway, it was a cool place to grow up.

Yes, you are correct, there was a Red Barn on Mayfield, very close to the South Euclid/Lyndhurst border, across from an IHOP and a Dairy Queen (several blocks from Brush High School, and just a little west of the old mansion that houses the Lyndhurst Library) It closed and was torn down, I'm guessing in the early '80s. Was rebuilt as something else (a Long John Silver's I believe), and then it became something else (a Taco Bell?) Not sure what, if anything, is on that site now.

This might have been mentioned...bumper hitching! Maybe not exclusive to Cleveland. But we sure did a lot of it when I was growing up. And all the other places I have lived I have not encountered any one else who knows what that is.
We could have killed ourselves, But it was soooooooooooo fun!

Listening in amazement as my cousin's band "CIRCUS" was actually
having their records actually played on The Buzzard.

Now I"M homesick!
LOL...chip chop ham. I haven't thought of that in years. My mom used to drown the stuff in ketchup and a dash of mustard, heat it up and call it BBQ chip chop ham.
Here are some of my favorites. Not doubt many repeats, but really, the place wasn't that big.:
-Newberry's in the Great Lakes Mall had a live monkey in a cage for years! Does anyone else remember that, or am I senile?
-Spencers in the Great Lakes Mall. Not to be confused with the Mentor Mall, across the street, which sucked, except that it had a game room and a theater
-ROMANBURGERS (I eat eat six every time I visit home)
-That head shop at the corner of SOM and Mayfield Rd. which despite all odds as been there forever. It's right next to a Mr. Hero, now that I think about it.
-The EastLake Drive IN. Seen every Don Knotts, Tim Conwaym Disney film there. The had a swing set up front, so you got there early to swing in your pajama's.
-That Porno shop on Vine St which despite all odds as been there forever
-Captain Penny, Mr Jingaling, Superhost, Barnaby, The Ghoul, and the masters: Big Chuck and Hoolihan/Little John.
-UHF channel 61 and Abbott and Costello movies
-The Feast of the Assumption in Murray Hill.
-Lightning bugs
I could go on, and may at another time....sigh...time marches on

Yes, there was actually a monkey at the Newberry's pet store. I bought a cockatiel there in 1989 that is still alive!
Regarding the Mentor Mall (again, not the Great Lakes Mall), I remember it as always depressing and empty. There was a state liquor store there that we could always count on for illegal liquor sales however!! Didn't they finally convert it to a regular strip mall after the roof collapsed from a snow storm?
Regarding the Vine St. store, didn't that porn store close after the murders there a few years ago?

I used to cook at that Speghetti Company in my youth. They had the only decent veal parmasian on the east side.
Davis bakery had the absolute best corned beef sandwhich this side of Conventry and Mario Fazio's had the best pizza. Fazio's sucks now, they've gone up scale and don't even make a decent pizza anymore. I knew the end was near the last time I ordered a pizza and they asked if I wanted "red sauce" or "white sauce" on in. Old Mario would be rolling in his grave.
And speaking of Coventry, I'm glad to see that it hasn't changed much. I remember spending hours in basement of the record shops going through the import and bookleg albums you couldn't get anywhere else.
I don't recall hearing that the porn shop was closed or about any murders. I'll have to google it.
Squires castle was always cool because we lived near enough that we could ride our bikes through the park to get there. It also used to be a good place to score a joint or two. (forerunner to the blunt, for you younger folk)
