Beynd that, I feel Stamford needs a convention center like a hole in the head.

Instead, fix the elephant in the room:

If these greedy property ownerrs and LLs start negotiation reasonable leases, at renewal time, we could retain and grow our previously historically robust, revenue and tax-generating retail base! No excuses for what's been happening these last three years or so. Physical stores are exiting Stamford more quickly than did factories forty to fifty years ago.

A convention hall needs attractions other than a bunch of supermarkets.

Stamford needs something though, some more entertainment options. If not a convention center, then somewhere to put Live @ 5 becausse the crowds are too loarge for its current area.

agreed, the retail base needs to generate more tax revenue

Stamford Innovation Week (SiW) which runs every fall in stamford needs the extra space too. If we ever get a convention center in the future though, I think SiW will become a much bigger event, like a lot smaller version of SXSW in Austin.

And an impressive debut from Yobird, thank you.

Great to see this momentum building in CT. Its really starting to bear the fruits of this tremendous US economy.
Firms renewing existing space and other's facing lease terminations continuing to keep operations in state show true committment all around. Higher paying roles are retained.

The Fairfield Five are doing an outstanding job. These great CT cities are well represented by consumate professionals. Well done.

Default What could fill in if Fairway leaves? Stamford readers share ideas

STAMFORD — Local residents say they would love to see a Stew Leonard’s grocery store come to Stamford and suggest it might be a great option for the Fairway Market location in the South End should the store be forced to close.

Fairway Market has filed a notice with the state Department of Labor saying it will have to close its grocery and wine store and lay off approximately 150 employees if buyers for the store do not emerge soon.

In an informal survey distributed by the Advocate on social media Thursday, respondents voted on what they would like to see replace Fairway should the store shutter. Out of 150 responses by 5:30 p.m., Stew Leonard’s had gotten just under 40 percent of the votes, with giant superstore Walmart coming in around 20 percent.

The Norwalk-based retailer, however, said it is not interested in opening a new store just 9 miles away from its home base, which has been there since 1969.

“Stamford is a little too close to our current store right here,” Stew Leonard Jr. said Thursday from Norwalk. “We get a lot of customers from Stamford right now, so it’s a little too close, but we love everybody in Stamford.”

The well-known Connecticut grocer recently opened a new store in Paramus, New Jersey. In addition to its Norwalk grocery store, it operates stores in Danbury and Newington in Connecticut as well as Yonkers, New York, and Farmingdale, New York.

“We have our arms full as a family,” Leonard Jr. said.

The closest Walmart is currently on Connecticut Avenue in Norwalk, 6.5 miles away from the current Fairway location in Stamford.

Other suggested stores to replace Fairway were Whole Foods with 13.4 percent of the votes, another Trader Joe’s at 9.4 percent, Wegman’s at 5.3 percent and another Target at 4.7 percent.

The closest Whole Foods for Stamford residents is currently in Darien, about 4 miles from Stamford’s city center. Stamford has a Trader Joe’s on High Ridge Road and a Target on Broad Street.
Other suggestions from readers included: Aldi, Costco, Stop & Shop, Bongiorno’s, Publix Supermarket and Jungle Jim’s. Some readers also suggested non-grocery options like the Container Store, Chick-fil-A and Lifetime Fitness.

Fairway Market is currently the only grocery store in the South End. The nearest full-service grocery store is the Super Grade A ShopRite one mile east, at 200 Shippan Ave.

“I hope that Fairway Market is able to reorganize or restructure in a way that will allow it to continue its operations in Stamford,” said Jon Winkel, executive director of the Stamford Partnership. “Personally, I’m there every two weeks or so to buy their coffee.”

If Fairway were to close, however, he said he would like to see another grocery store or food destination take its place.

“The residents of the South End and downtown deserve local grocery stores,” Winkel said. “It would be wonderful if a new-to-Stamford grocery store took its place. That said, any grocery option in the space would be good for the city and surrounding neighborhoods.”

Thomas Madden, the city’s economic development director, has said the city would look to bring in another food establishment if the store has to close.

“We have already spoken with several potential tenants that could potentially take over the store, answering their questions about the market conditions here in Stamford and directing these potential tenants to (landlord) BLT,” Madden said earlier this week.

He said it’s important to note that Fairway’s potential closing is a result of a bankruptcy filing, not a result of Stamford market conditions.

Martin’s office is also planning a grocery-focused job fair with the state Department of Labor and workforce-development nonprofit The Workplace. ShopRite-Grade A Markets and Stew Leonard’s have confirmed that they would participate, while the city is waiting to hear back from ACME and Stop & Shop, Madden said.

I Think if Fairway goes out. Whole Foods will be the logical one to replace them since they are not in Stamford.

I love fairway, and Stamford is one of their most profitable locations. Too bad they had to mismanage the corporation into bankruptcy.

Many grocery stores could take over. Whole Foods, maybe, but there’s already ones in Greenwich and Darien.
