I don’t think that would matter. There is a large enough market for another one. Jay

Also up in Fairfield and Norwalk but so what, it would be a great fit.
Stew Jr's making a big mistake, a Stew Leonard's would be perfect. I think cannibilization would be minimal.

Stamford mall owners to sell company for $3.6 billion
https://www.stamfordadvocate.com/bus...Qs8YNCqB4KB320

STAMFORD — Taubman Centers, which co-owns Stamford Town Center, announced Monday that it had agreed to be sold to retail real estate giant Simon Property Group for about $3.6 billion, but the for-sale Stamford mall will remain on the market.

The announcement comes about five months after Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based Taubman and co-owner UBS Realty Investors put the embattled downtown shopping center up for sale. The property could be redeveloped under a new owner, but the mall will remain open in the foreseeable future.

This morning it was announced that the Stamford Macy’s is NOT on the list of stores to be closed. Heard it on the radio. Jay

I'm surprised Simon took an interest- it's not like they want to transform it high-end and compete with the Norwalk mall; the fact they want to keep it for sale seems to prove that.

Thinking about what the future of the Stamford Town Center could be, Ya know, since they already have the restaurants in the front of the mall, if they did demolish the main part of the mall and keep Macy's, I would make the space a Stamford version of Blueback Square in West Hartford. Then open main street back up and connect it through Veterans park to Mill River Park. It would definitely be pedestrian-friendly.

According to the article, Stamford Town Center is still for sale. Simon is interested in their other properties like Westfarms and Short Hills which I believe is one of the highest grossing malls in the country. Jay

This is 100% what should happen. It's a chance to right an enormous wrong that was committed when a suburban shopping mall was dropped into the middle of an urban downtown. Veteran's Park and 6 Landmark aren't going anywhere, but you can reconnect Main Street and reestablish some of the street grid as shown in the (very rough) image attached.

That would be amazing, but who’s going to pay to turn leasable retail space into roadway?

I think the question is whether the mall is more valuable being re-purposed within something approximating its current form, or whether the land is more valuable if the new owner starts over. It seems pretty clear that this isn't going to be a mall going forward. So the retail space in the mall isn't going to be retail space much longer. Plenty of malls have been redeveloped around the country, but they're typically in suburban settings. I guess one possibility is to do what was done with the Chapel Square Mall in New Haven and just convert it to apartments within the existing mall structure (picture below). In my opinion, that's far from ideal because it does nothing to remove the hulking presence that divides downtown. I also think that they did in New Haven is pretty ugly.
