He'd be just as sick (assuming he did it) whether the woman was 7, 17, 77, or anything in between.

Even though he's a moron, you never hear of men committing acts of felony for the affections of a 77 year old woman. And likewise, you dont hear of women committing felonies for the affections of a 77 year old man.
Correction- he will be the girlfriend.... in prison. Provided he lives long enough, that is. Don't think his crime is going to endear him to his fellow inmates.
This is one of the biggest fables, usually spread by chicken-hearted jurors who failed to vote in favor of the death penalty in capital cases.
Prisons are littered with the dregs of humanity who killed infants and children (theirs or other people's), many of whom were sexually assaulted before being brutally murdered, and these rotten things are gettin' fat and sassy behind bars, at taxpayer expense. Give me a break.

Yes, to an extent. In her defense, she's 17. Lots of 17 year olds (male and female) don't want to be in a relationship with someone who has a child. I know I didn't.
LOVE that people are finding some way to blame the 17 year old girl in this. Brilliant.
I am really surprised by that. Unless she, in some way, suggested killing the child, she's not guilty. I had the impression she wanted him to give up his visitation, not kill the boy. It's like saying if you tell someone you won't date overweight people, so they become anorexic it's somehow "your fault." Or if you tell someone you don't date people who are broke, so they rob a bank so it's also "your fault." Or if you tell someone you don't date women taller than you so she chops off her feet to be shorter, that's your fault.
See where I am going with this? Taking extreme measures (like this guy killing his son) isn't something you'd expect a person to do if you tell them you won't date them for X reason. Most rational people would think that means they aren't interested in you and move on. They wouldn't kill their own child (and who here would really expect someone to?)
The man in this case is very mentally disturbed and I highly doubt a 17-year-old "kid" who didn't live with him, was away at college, and (from the sounds of it) wasn't really as interested in him as he was in her really understood that.
As the father of a six year old and a 4 year old, this sickens me beyond words. Little boys cling to their daddies. I say make this guy suffer. Peel his skin off and burn it before his eyes as he breathes his last breaths.
I'm the father of a 2 year old son, I think your plan is too lenient.
