I can do all that stuff but certifications are another thing entirely. There's a lot of arcane network knowledge that you have to memorize.

When I was in high school I used to write programs for my TI-83 during class. I once made a sprite engine for games. But understanding programming algorithms and getting a comp sci degree are entirely different things. You have to memorize programming languages, and to apply for jobs you have to "know" 5 or 6 languages. Yes I can figure out how to do things when I need to, like I set up a model to automate 90% of my work at EOG. But that won't get me a higher level GIS developer job. You have to take expensive courses and memorize memorize memorize.

You know Blink, the biggest cost on my new surfski wasn't the fact that it's made from handspun carbon weave with a harrington pattern kevlar inlay, it was actually the shipping. Not cheap from South Africa to Maui. I was going to fire up the Lear, and pilot it down there myself to pick up the boat, but my LJ85 is on loan to Oprah, and the LJ60 is still being aired out, (NEVER AGAIN WILLIE!!!) So I was left with my always dependable Graff Zeppilin LZ-27, however, due to the soaring cost of helium, and the obvious inherent dangers with hydrogen, I was left with little choice but to hire a local SA firm to ferry the surfski up from East London. Now, I thought they would just put it into a 40 footer, and transport it via container vessel to Honolulu, then on to Maui. But no, they actually ferried it up here, two guys, paddling in shifts, all the way from South Africa. The boat made it OK, however, one of the crew did not. Lucky for me, they were insured, AND, non-union..

Uuurrrrppp, see you in the water, Blink

Why didn't they just attach wings to it and fly it here?

Maybe I should learn carbon fiber working... I figured out fiberglass and epoxy to repair my waveski. It's really strange that nobody builds fiberglass/carbonfiber kayaks and surfboards here.

But it's a bummer knowing it's impossible to even afford your own place working as a professional here simply because your skills aren't valued or respected. The same goes for another place I like, Austin. Unless you're a programmer you're screwed (similar situation there as SF).
People that are making a good income in IT are not only software and web developers. There are many other specialities, such as help desk staff, server support, workstation/laptop support, network infrastructure, software support, backup & disaster recovery, trainers, testers, project managers, database administrators, security specialists, IT managers, and many other specialities. I know of DBAs who turn down $140K job offers because they can make more than that. In some corporate IT environments, its very common to earn $100K in a variety of IT specializations, not just software engineering.

There are companies who don't pay IT workers as much. Those are the companies to avoid when seeking employment. There are places that don't pay IT workers as much too. Unfortunately, Hawaii is one of those places where IT workers are generally not paid very well.

It's great you are able to get outside and have fun on your time off or work. There's a lot of low cost things people can do outside. However, it's unfortunate you feel that you are locked out of home ownership. You could probably change that future destiny.

HEY!!! I KNOW THAT GUY!! AND USED TO PADDLE THE SAME BOAT!!!!!! A Rose Ski!! Built by Marshall Rosa in Niu Valley. And Selleck was a pretty good paddler

Uuuurrrppp, I've lived in Hawaii for waaaayyyyy too long

Just to add, Blink wouldn't stand a chance in a race. My very first boat was a Shane Waveski, about 10 feet long, 18 inches wide, flat bottom. Not made for speed. Probably similar to what Blink has. Anyways, the ocean is the cheapest therapy available in Hawaii. JUST GO!!

You know Tom Selleck?? I was reading a surfski forum and apparently they became popular in the 80s because of Magnum PI. But you hardly ever see them now.

I got a waveski because it's short enough to fit in my car, about 7.5ft. Also light enough to carry down to the beach like a surfboard. But it's very inefficient compared to a long kayak or surfski. The furthest I've paddled so far is 2 miles. I patched some big holes in it with fiberglass and put on a 10 inch FCS Hatchet surfboard fin so it's more stable. Also in the process of painting it. Got the underside done in white and black to "repel" sharks

That's backwards. A surfski was used in the opening scene because they were popular in Hawaii. And you don't see them that much anymore because the OC1 boat is considered to be more 'Polynesian', the fact is that any idiot can paddle an OC1 boat, surfski takes skill, and an ability to read the ocean. Didn't see anyone out there this morning, between Kama'ole One and Polo Beach, not a soul on the water heading down. Of course, there is a high surf warning posted. And, there's the ever present threat from the killer opihi.

I won't even mention the canniyouknowwhat

My wife and I both enjoy kayaking on lakes and have been kayaking on the ocean some. Is there a good place on Maui that I could rent a waveski? I'd like to give it a try!

Don't outrigger canoers usually paddle only between the main hull and the outrigger? Ben Hur taught me that twists your body

I went paddling around 10 at Ulua and caught a few little waves. With the wind there was a steady series of waves
