I work in the industry as well, and we have a number grads from Texas schools in different departments including engineering.

In fact, I think I can frame this a bit. It seems to me many of you here are in the oil industry. How many of you that work for the oil industry are from outside of Texas? Furthermore, how many are from outside of the country?

I'm going to guess the vast majority of you are not from Texas.
Do you think all the people that work in Silicon Valley are from California? Do you think all the people who work on wall street are from New York? All major industries recruit Nationwide, world wide. I work at a big Law firm, we have attorneys from schools from all over the country.

You make a good point until you say you work for a law firm. Considering what has been done to tort reform in conjunction with the fact that there is a surplus of lawyers, you'd think you would be able to hire only locally. And if you are not, why aren't you?

Every smart employer will look at the resumes, perform interviews and hire the person who fits the position the best. Unless being local improves the ability to perform the job, I don't see why you would necessarily choose a local person over someone from Chicago, Miami or Beaumont.

WHAT? Why do you keep trying to make something up that you have NO evidence to support?

But that's just it. The vast majority of people that would apply to a law firm in Houston would naturally be from Texas, yet 14Bricks is saying they look all over the place. Wouldn't that kind of lead you to believe that the best lawyers are not being produced in Texas?

As for Silicon Valley, have you ever been there? Of COURSE you are going to get people from all over the world who want to live in one of the most beautiful places in America. I love Houston and all, but we ain't Frisco.

Again, pay attention. Major Law firms recruit nationwide. They don't just recruit John Doe who was a 2.0 student at U of H. They get people who graduated from the top of there class. Yes there may be a surplus of law graduates, but only the best and brightest get the good jobs. We have recruiting department and that's all they do. We have a summer program were they bring in the summer associates to work in the summer. They come from all over. And then they make a offer to the ones they want. I didn't understand the second part of your question. Why aren't I what?

Why isn't your firm hiring locally was my question. So basically, you are saying TX doesn't produce the best attorneys. If they were, why would your firm spend all that money to look all over the country? Recruiting isn't cheap.

Do you think Boston goes all over the country? I highly doubt it.
