The June 30 results of a Rasmussen telephone survey concerning American's views on immigration are instructive. Fully 63 percent of voters view gaining control of the border as a high priority - a result that bears out earlier surveys. Moreover, 32 percent of those surveyed identified themselves as "angry" about the immigration issue.

Voters paying attention to this issue know that since 2000, an estimated 10 million to 12 million immigrants have arrived, representing the highest seven-year period of immigration in U.S. history. If immigration were to continue at this rate, the nation's population would increase from 301 million today to 468 million in 2060, a 56 percent increase.

Research on the impact this is having on the U.S. economy reveals that Americans are spending between $11 billion and $22 billion on welfare to illegal immigrants each year by state governments. Of this, $2.2 billion a year is spent on food assistance programs such as food stamps and free school lunches.

An estimated $2.5 billion a year is spent on Medicaid.

Approximately $12 billion is spent on primary and secondary school education for children that are here illegally, many of whom cannot speak English.

Thirty percent of all federal prison inmates are illegal immigrants.

Native-born Americans are losing an estimated $200 billion in wages that have been driven down by the influx of illegal immigrants.
Meanwhile, over the past five years, illegal immigrants sent home remittances estimated to be between $25 billion and $45 billion to their countries of origin.

Guest opinion: U.S. needs moratorium on virtually all immigration | ONLINE EXCLUSIVE

Nothing new, just what we've been saying all along.

Can we please end this craziness and put AMERICANS first? We need a big time out to get our country back on track and make sure that these companies don't have the option to hire illegal salve labor or even cheap foreign legal labor via visas etc. We need to put Americans first.

I agree. Unfortunately, too many of our "government" officials have minions on all levels pushing the OBL agenda no matter what the cost is to Americans. We need a massive state to state protest of angry Americans to take place no later than October otherwise . . . .

The insanity continues. . . .

I agree with the both of you. It has to stop and our country needs time to assimilate all of the ones who are citizens and work on the immigration system. We also need to secure the borders by any means necessary.

I am in total agreement with all. Illegal aliens have selfishly supplanted the law-abiding immigrants who choose to play by the rules. Due to the massive illegal alien invasion, we have no recourse but to halt legal immigration until this mess can be resolved. Illegal aliens have clearly illustrated they care about no one but themselves. We have enough egocentric citizens. The last thing we need is to grant citizenship to millions more.

Sadly, those who want to take on the task of coming to the US legally have to suffer because of the US's neglect of our borders and our broken immigration system. I think our country is too much of a mess to take on immigrants without it being at a reduced rate.

Agreed, I think a 10 year moratorium on ALL immigration sounds nice so that we can strengthen our border security by reforming the US Border Patrol into a paramilitary force similar to the French Gendarmerie, German Bundesgrenshutz, Spanish Guardia Civil, Dutch Koninklijke Marechaussee or the Italian Carabinieri along with some system of border defenses and to fix the immigration system to better handle the future immigration plans.

We should also take that time to consider a cap on immigration in the future, perhaps 100,000 per year or only allow immigrants with a certain skill or education level.

All immigration should have been stopped on September 12, 2001. Then it should have been throughly examined and reformed.

It's not going to happen, the gov't can secure the border without putting a stop on all immigration.

You are telling the truth and especially as long and the illegal lovers keep pushing for the illegals to get amnesty and to be treated the same as American citizens.
