Winnebago schools are just fine, probably better than most Rockford schools, both academically and in the area of sports.

And I have lived in both WI and IL, taxes are higher in WI, but the schools offer much more for the children, more resources and higher standards. Although if you stay in the Rockton/Roscoe area you will be fine, too.

Default West Side Rockton/Auburn area???

Not sure what to do now!

Should I or shouldn't I? I am considering a move to Rockford with a child entering kindergarten. Right now I need affordability, obviously that can be found in Rockford. Found a place (rental) in an historic district (I believe) near Rockton Ave/Auburn St. I realize this is "the west side." But does anybody know specifically about that pocket?? I don't want to live in fear. I don't want to worry about our safety and simply trying to exist. I don't want to overreact either. The move is temporary--6 months, to a year, tops. Any suggestions or thoughts? Knowledge on that specific area?

Help me, please!

In my opinion the area you are thinking about is not a good area. I suggest you drive thru any area you are thinking about moving to during the day and during the night and even a weekend day and night.Stop and get out and go for a nice walk in the neighborhood you are thinking about. You may be able to tolerate the area but I myself would not choose that area. Its just very run down. I use to do business in that neighborhood with the Greys Supermarket on Auburn st and I never had any trouble with anyone.Rockford is not the only place that is cheap. There are cheap places all over the USA
Feel free to PM me or ask here for any more information.

Rocky your gigs up. I'm calling you out right here as a liar.

Looking back through your posts I see you claim in one post that you moved to Rockford a year ago, then in a another you claim to have grown up in Rockford, left and never looked back.

You're a confused soul.

Okay, there are plenty of discussions bashing rockford. I would like to chime in. I moved to Rockford 1 year ago. I am a highly paid professional religious minority. Want to let out some steam. Dont want someone else to make the same mistake. This is obviously only my opinion. Here is my take:
Beating Rockford a little more...

I got out of Rockford quite some time ago. Never looked back. Just cant believe a place like this can exist.
Rockford isn't great, BUT it has its advantages

I've lived in Rockford all my life. You can buy a lot of house for your money here. Our biggest problems include unemployment and poor road conditions, lots of pot holes. Some schools in Rockford are better than others. I would avoid Kennedy Middle School! But some really GREAT public schools are West View Elementary, RESA Middle School, Eisenhower Middle School, Jefferson High School, Auburn (Gifted Program) High School, Bloom Elementary School. All four of my kids have gone to West View and I couldn't be happier! My oldest goes to Jefferson HS right now and I'm happy with that as well. One of my kids will start RESA in the fall, it seemed fantastic when we attended the orientation. Crime here is not so bad if you're not out looking for it! If you're out looking for it, you'll find it, but I'll bet you could say the same about any town! We have a wonderful park district here with many special activities to choose from. The far east side of Rockford is booming, housing will be more expensive out there. I really like the northwest side of Rockford for housing so if you're considering moving here you can find a beautiful home in a nice quiet neighborhood at an affordable price on the northwest side.

To "befriend" avoid Rockton Auburn historical area, not so good there, just a little further north is so much better. Stay north of Auburn and you should be fine. Check out West View School, it's on the northwest side and a wonderful place for your child to attend school.

Please explain to me why a person would want to move somewhere for cheap housing and then pay public school taxes, then turn around and send their kids to private schools??

This defeats the purpose!

Stay away from Auburn Street period. Even where there aren't drive bys and problems, there are A TON OF BREAK INS. Then not only will you need to pay for private schools, you will have to invest in a security system. Not that the police ever show up on time----
