That’s the problem - LI won’t collapse today or tomorrow. But how much longer can this be realistically kept up?
I see 10 years no problem.
But as time moves on the population growth on LI doesn’t keep up with the nation as a whole. LI loses representation in Congress. Less federal funding to keep things afloat.
We may all be long dead by then but it’s not unreasonable to think 50 years from now LI turns into more of a backwater when many NYC jobs don’t have to be done in NYC.
We wondered that 30 years ago. Fairchild left, Grumman was packing up, Citibank opened a new building in Queens and was moving people in the Huntington Quadrangle to it, available housing stock was low, Halprin’s tax shock hit, young people were moving off and other calamities that were supposed to kill the Island.
But...it never happened. Things went bad, the Island adjusted and continued on.
In this thread:
People who left Long Island constantly posting here and trying to convince current residents (and themselves) that LI is doomed.
I don’t go to the forum of whatever podunk NC town you moved to and constantly post there...

Many of us have family still on LI...at least the ones who aren’t yet convinced that LI is doomed or are already planning to move to a podunk NC town.

Your use of the word “podunk “ exposes your prejudice regarding anything away from the big apple. When
I first convinced my wife -a lifetime Long Islander- to look at North Carolina, she expected something similar to the Beverly Hillbillies TV show. She was surprised and amazed when she looked around here.
It’s true there are many differences but the lifestyle is great. Many people will not be pleased with the differences here but the most people from the northeast that live in our community are very happy. I
Guess that I get upset regarding my new home and the prejudices against the south in general.

Shush. Keep them all east of Eden!
NC sucks - nothing to see here. Back to your lives citizens. Also don’t them know that by far the biggest group of transplants are midwesterners. Shhh!
Florida is in a league all by itself.
It is...The Twilight Zone...
