We're in the Brunswick/Topsham area. Although the area is still dominantly white folks, there is a good mix of all people. The university and Naval Air Station help to bring in people from all over.

If there are racist attitudes here, I sure haven't found them yet. People here are amazingly friendly. The whole time we've been here, I think I've run into one person who had an attitude, and even then, it wasn't a race thing. She was just a rich snob.

In my vast travels (well. not so vast, but enough to have some idea about this) I've found that pretty much all regions have some very insular small rural towns where outsiders are never fully accepted. If you put yourself in the place of the natives, it's understandable, though it does make it rough on the newcomers from outside. Seems to be a phenomenon you can find everywhere, however.

White people can't live at the equator, they get skin cancer, cataracts,
varicose veins (from the heat) and even fall right over dead from the heat.
In a hot room, the blood rushes to the surface in an effort to cool a
person. This is no myth. This is scientific fact. I've seen people given
up for dead in hospitals, make a complete recovery in a cold environment
My opinion is that white people should
stay in the north. Black people can get more sun. Brown people should
stay in between. A black man is going to have more health problems
in the North, especially in a real cold area. I'm a real racist, but I stop
at sending people South on a bus, which is just what they do at the
Mexican border. I am eager to go back up North where I came from.
Why anyone would want to subject their body to all the abuse the
wrong climate has to offer is something I don't understand. People want
to pretend that this is bull manure, but it isn't. Every year in football
practice, some young guy in perfect health drops over dead from heat
exhaustion. It's not the player, it's the climate. This isn't just nonsense,
a person is designed for a certain climate.
Hey BigChuckie, I had the same thought about how the football player who died of heat stroke was black. Thanks for pointing out the (if I remember my high school math correctly) exception that disproves the theorem.

Ya know, the theory quoted above might have something to it, um, well, at least if we all lived outdoors and ran around naked. That wasn't the case, however, the last time I checked.

I'm black and I can't stand the heat, particularly, in the South. It does bad things to me. I do better when it gets cold outside, which is why I'm trying to move to a colder climate, like Minnesota, Pacific Northwest, Alaska, and Colorado.

Maine. I must say that I had a wonderful time when I went to visit some time ago. It was really nice. I was a little guarded at first, but the people were really nice for the most part. Somewhat like the south, but without the fakeness.

So, to all you Mainelanders , thank you for your hospitality. I had a great time and will hopefully have a summer home in your great state soon.

Really, I was unaware of this. My father has had Multiple Sclerosis since I was 18 months old. I know the statistics on children of people with MS, 1in ten in general population, 3 in ten of male children with one parent afflicted and I beleive 4 in ten of female children. For the record, I have 3 little sisters and this has always been a concern. I love the Maine weather...hope this doesn't mean onm some weird genetic level that I am s-c-r-e-w-e-d.
