just came in from outside, and it's 61 here now...so we'll probably be in the upper 40s tonight....doesn't look like we'll get a spectacular sunset tonight though, not a whole lot of clouds

So will the leaves be turning while we are up? It would be so awesome to drive up Rt. 1 and see the water and the trees turning too!! Sigh..heaven on earth!

I don't know if the bright color will have begun. Some are turning now...little bit of yellow and I did see a young tree all in red last weekend. It doesn't seem as though we got much rain over the summer though, and I'm wondering how that impacts color.....anyone know if it does?

a dry summer is supposed to give you some nice color in the fall, esp. if you have some clear days. It's really a combo of how much water and light the trees get. Basically the trees respond to the shorter days and dry climate -they stop making food through their leaves. No food = no chlorphyll - so no green in the leaves, and only the other pigments (reds/yellows/oranges) are left - till the leaf falls and dies. Most people don't realize all those pretty fall colors are in the leaves all the time, you just don't see them because the green chlorophyll covers them up. Maybe more than you wanted to know?
Wish I was there to see it - but have enjoyed the pics on earlier postings

no! you explained it perfectly...I'm glad to hear that. My dad used to tell me that the amount of rain made a difference, I couldn't remember how! We'll see if we can all get some pics up!
