As a native of Elmhurst/Woodside/Jackson Heights, I think this map is pretty damn good. It's not perfect, but putting together something like this is very tough to nail down the first time around. I think in a general sense the OP is in the ballpark on most of these areas.

This is a good tool for tourists/out-of-towners.

Is Christopher Street still that bad? We booked a place there for a week in December several months that had great reviews and hearing great things about the WV.... but since seeing it on here I have found alot of articles (mostly 2 years old, a few newer) about how dangerous it can be at night. Spotcrime.com makes it look really bad too, yet reviews for all the places in the area don't say one bad thing. Now I'm all worried about it... should we find someplace else to stay?!?!

I will be working at St John's Hospital in Far Rockaway next year, and was thinking of renting at Wavecrest Gardens which is in the red zone in the Queens map. How is the apartment complex? Will have elementary school age kids + wife. Thanks.

It's ok....not the best but not the worst either...majority of the units are renovated now. Some guys hang around the shopping center but they don't bother anybody. But very convenient for you to work and nobody bothers anybody that works at the hospital so even if you work a late shift, you'll be just fine walking home at any time.

Schools aren't that great. You might want to look in to a charter school like Peninsula Prep.

Great find. I have never seen a shooting map of the city before. The Tremont/south Fordham area had a terrible year in 2012.

Thus far, two shootings reported in East Harlem last night, one at Park and 116th and one just above on Park Avenue.
