I'd rather not waste my time on people who are going to be nasty about who I am. Personally I don't see the point in lying about this sort of thing unless you're desperately craving acceptance whether it's genuine or not.
We all crave acceptance. Some of us do not admit it, but that is what we all desire, in our own way. I'm not a bad person for simply wanting to fit in.
I legally changed my name when I was 19. It's not that my former name was bad (officially, it's now my middle name), it's just that I preferred "Michelle."

You should be proud of where you come from and who you are. You're of Ghanian descent and you should be proud of that. West Africans are great people especially the Aka people of Ghana. West Africans are very entreupurnal, very industrious, and at times pursue and education. You're from the Midwest. Your upbringing is very similar to those who moved to NYC in recent years. You will have nothing in common with a native New Yorker, unless that native New Yorker spent 4-5 years in a dorm college filled majority like minded suburbanites. Even though you admitted you're willing to be open to anyone and everyone. Most likely you wont and quickly retreat amongst your cohort.
People don't move to NYC to find love, People don't move to NYC to make a new identity for themselves. People move to NYC to make a name for themselves or make career, if not gain work experience and move to pick white fenced suburbia.
As for having slave ancestry embarrassing? I cnat really say. I was shocked to know my African Ancestors were free persons. Either way they still are black. BUt then again this did not happen in America. But yes some Africans look differently towards African Americans, but blacks in general who live in the new World who are descendants of slavery. But hey is the West Africans who trades slaves with Portuguese, French, Spanish and British merchants.

Do exactly what my beautiful black American wife did, marry a sweet, handsome, Italian guy with a rock hard body that knows how to love his black queen. Plenty of real white men out there that would adore you. Time to get with the swirl my lady.

I just moved from another state (in the Midwest) to NYC. I am wondering if people believe it's wrong for me to claim a new identity, now that I'm in a new location? I ask because, over and over, I would hear the worst stereotypes about women like me (I happen to be black American). I do not fit those stereotypes, and was so tired of being judged and criticized by others for simply being a black American woman.
Long story short, I am college educated and 20 something. Upon relocating, I decided to take on a new identity. Since I repeatedly hear how black women from other cultures are so much more classier than black American women, I essentially tell people (if/when) they ask, that I'm not black American. I have noticed that people, particularly men treat me in a much better fashion and tend to be so much kinder.
Has anyone else noticed this as well? I am just amazed, because I'm the same person. I don't behave any differently, I just notice there is a very remarkable difference in how I'm treated.

I'm not really sure what I will find, but I'm trying to keep an open mind. I don't mind befriending native New Yorkers, or transplants, like myself. One thing is for sure, this is definitely a place where people re-invent themselves.
