I have two children. One is 18 the other one 12. I have never used a leash and never would. I have seen children with them on and I don't like it. I'm not saying that they are undignified or inhumane. I personally just do not like them. I also do not take my kids to church, but that doesn't mean other parent shouldn't take their kids, etc, etc.

thats another important point. just because something isnt for you or you prefer not to use it, doesnt mean it isnt good for other people. i also think this is something that looks worse to people without children than people with children.

I agree. Before I had my son, I always though they were odd. But my son is now 18 months old and he's at that age where he doesn't always want to sit in his stroller. So we hold his hold or let him walk a little in front on us and then he takes off in another direction. He's not quite old enough to fully understand when we say "hold our hand" or "stay." It's fine now because it's just him, but if we had another, younger child and we were going somewhere super crowded, like Disney, I might consider it. Not saying I would definitely do it, but I certainly get it a lot more now.
My first two sons were nice, well behaved children. They listened to Mama, and stayed close. I would have never needed any type of leash on either one. Then, I birthed, "tornado boy". A completely different type of child, with different ways of thinking.
Those parents who have perfect children like my other kids probably think that "leash Moms" are really strange...
I love when people say "why can't people control their kids?" (Not quoting anyone here.) This means that the person saying such a remark: 1) Doesn't have kids; 2) Doesn't remember what it's like to have kids; 3) Never pay enough attention to their own kids.
Anyway, we tried using a harness when ours was 15 months old, but he would just keep falling over after still trying to run away. It was more work than chasing after him. We tried it again the other day (he's now 3), and he just unbuckled it and took it off and ran away anyway.
