Our last pet, a Lab named Gabe, was euthanized at home a few months ago. Here are the pictures:

My brother was present for our family cat's euthanasia. It was definitely rough on him and I can only imagine how it would be for me. I say that I wouldn't want to be present, but I definitely would be present if I had to put my cat down as I'm one of the only ones who can calm him down. I wouldn't want him freaked out and stressed going through that all.

I'll pass on the photos... I realize that's a "thing" now with home euthanasia, but to me it's such a private, somber, and even sacred event that I would feel like I was intruding looking at them.

My sister's Boston terrier will be euthanized at her home tomorrow. She is having a very tough time with it since she has had him since he was a puppy but will have family there to support her.

I think that this is the only downfall to having pets is having to let them go and making the decision.

I posted these for people who would consider it rather than euthanasia at the vet. At home, it's a much calmer, more gentle procedure. I hope the pictures convey that.

Well, thanks to everyone - I will look for a vet who can come to the house if the situation is amenable to it (for instance, it probably wasn't with our cat but I can see that it would have been with our two dogs). I'll go ahead and look into it so that I'm not "in the situation" when it comes.

Yes. We go into it, knowing their days are short, and numbered, yet we still do it, and get so much from it. Only hoping, that day will be long in coming.

While it's sad that their lives are shorter than ours and we have to live without them, how much worse would it be for them if the situation were reversed and they were left without their loving owners?

Have you not yet run across that REDDIT meme? To dogs, humans are like elves that live hundreds of years.

After reading about the experiences others had with multiple pets in the home I'm convinced that will be the way to go with ours also. Fortunately I already know our new vet provides that option. Thanks to everyone who shared their stories. Hopefully we won't need it any time soon but at least the decision about home vs office has been made.
