I used to go to the TG&Y at Indian School and Hayden, which was rebuilt after the fire in 1969. At the back they had a fish tank where they sold fish bowls, supplies, and of course fish. Used to get a lot of school supplies from there... especially the styrofoam balls and rings for our science projects about atoms and the solar system. And, yes, they has a rustic smell to them.

In 1986 the Oklahoma City-based TG&Y was bought out by the McCrory's chain. The chain didn't last long after that. Prior to that, when Mr. Young retired in the 70s, the chain started to decline. The last one I ever remember was one in Enid, OK, around 1985 or so.

On the subject of defunct retailers, anyone remember LaBelle's catalog showrooms? I don't remember where they were anymore, but they were big in the 1970s and early 1980s.

McCrory's also bought out the J.J. Newberry's stores, and they all closed, too. There used to be a Newberry's at Tower Plaza.

McCrory's also owned OTASCO, or Oklahoma Tire and Supply Company. Was there ever one in the Phoenix area? There were some in 10 states other than OK, but the only one I ever saw was in Enid (reference two posts earlier). There's the remnants of one in Chickasha between OKC and my current locale.

Speaking of auto supplies, anyone remember Western Auto? In the 60s and 70s they carried a lot more than auto parts. There are still some associate dealers but the chain was purchased by Sears in the late 80s... they were the only place other than a Ford dealer one could get an air filter for a 5.0 HO with fuel injection (1986 Mustang GT). There's a TV ad attached, featuring Ray Scott as their spokeman. I remember them being quite common, but don't remember any specific Valley locations other than one around Tower Plaza.

This photo was taken in Phoenix. The guy lines that used to help hold up utility poles were very strong; they had a curved sheet metal cover over the lower part so people would not walk into them and hurt themselves. That is probably what helped this late 40's Buick woody climb the wire after an accident.

How do you remember Phoenix? Stories from long time residents...-phx-car-crash-up-guy-wire

Looking forward to our 800,000th view.

Many of these calendars are prized today as collectors items.

Nowadays you'd either get sued because somebody, who's panties are in a bunch, was offended or arrested as a sex offender for hanging one up. What the hell happened to our country?
