Bob's Big Boy on Central Ave was where I purchased my first 35mm Minolta. The gentleman selling it asked me to meet with him there for the exchange. I've been a Minolta freak since. Canon's are fine as are Nikon (price, be real).

Village Inn pizza, haven't heard that name in a long time. During the 70's, we'd frequent the location at Indian School and Hayden Rd's on some Friday/Saturday nights. We would order up a pitcher of root beer and mix it with Bacardi's Rum from the liquor store across the street (anyone remember the name?). The staff NEVER complained. Especially when someone would light a mexican cigarette. Not one peep. Perhaps we entertained them, seeing that they had to work on the weekend.

They had old time movies there, right?

There was a Trailwest liquor store in that area. The Village Inn did run old silent movies, usually Charlie Chaplin. I used to go to the one on Glendale and 15th Ave.

There was Earl's Market next door to Markgrafs Pharmacy. The liquor store was at the end of the shopping center, next to Hayden Rd, across from the Village Inn on Indian School Rd.
I remember when Earls and Markgrafs went up in flames. Big (huge?) story in Scottsdale at the time.

Kachina Liquors. There was also a TG&Y store.

After church it was a treat to stop at the bakery at Earl's for pastries. I remember how the west side of Earl's was cordoned off after the fire so they could remain open, with significant smoke damage to the wall.

I got many supplies for science projects (styrofoam balls to make a model of an atom, poster board, etc) at TG&Y and Markgraf's.

Of note: 500 pages in this thread.

Forgot all about Kachina Liquors, between Tiger Wash and Happiness House. My mom used to play bridge with the owners a lot, Sias (sp?) family.

The SE corner of Hayden and Indian School had the closest fast food to my HS (Saguaro) in the late 70s... we'd sometimes go to the McDonald's "just because" and to invade Scottsdale HS Beaver Country.

I think that McD's is still there....Saguaro Class of '80 here (as you know, sluggo) and we hit it during lunch, also....amazing, at the time, to just leave school w/o notice and "go out" for lunch....that McD's was/is on a strange "hill" that always intrigued me.....

when was the Earl's/Markgraf's fire?.....was it at Indian School and Scotts. Rd.?

I stand corrected, it was not an Earl's/Markgrafs (as I inadvertently posted earlier) fire but a Markgrafs/TG&Y fire in April 1969. Two separate Earl's stores owned by different Earls.

Thanks for the article. I had forgotten that there was a doctor's office there as well, it's where I got my FAA medical certificates in the late 70s/early 80s before going off to the USAF.

Markgraf's was where we'd go for our back-to-school supplies (pecils, paper, notebooks, rulers, etc). They also had at one time an old-school soda fountain in the back.
