I'm not a recipient, never have been but the folks I know who use SNAP to supplement their incomes are all very appreciative and very thankful. Not one has the entitlement mentality I read about here. Many of the folks who come to our outreach meal offer to help set-up/clean-up/serve etc. Not one person of the 225 - 250 who come takes the approach I deserve this, in fact I deserve more - give it to me.
i think the one thing that can be said is that we conservatives sometimes cannot see the forest for the trees. the liberals LOVE it when conservatives talk about the fraud that conservatives can see with their own eyes (food stamp fraud/disability fraud/using your own children to collect government payments fraud), but the real fraud is in the government-that you can't see on a daily basis.
the real fraud is in the wars and the war spending, the "foreign aid", the double dipping, the giant pensions, the shorter work life than the private sector before you collect those pensions, the perpetual raises, the fact that the entire government sector is funded through the private sector and that the private sector is on the hook now for literally trillions of dollars in future payments-promised by the self-rewarding government sector.
or the fact that the government is now literally stealing the future pensions, as geithner so aptly and honestly pointed out, and stole the social security money before that. (throwing it into the "general fund"). they have spent the money that future generations needed and put aside, and that should be the focus of the conservative anger-and the anger of the general population, as well.
i think americans see it ,and that is why we have both a tea party movement and an OWS movement, because they understand that what is happening is NOT MATHEMATICALLY SUSTAINABLE-and something is going to give.
that should be the big focus, not on the fact that some americans are abusing the welfare/food stamp/disability system-which they are, by the way.

This thread is about food stamps, otherwise I agree.
It's absurd because in the real world you need to prepare yourself for a job market that exists somewhere other than in your own head.
I'd love to be a Nigerian movie critic but no one is hiring for that..........
I do believe someone in here just criticized people for getting degrees in jobs that don't exist anymore, even if they existed four years ago and told it was a good idea.
So, that wouldn't be you now, would it?

Humans are inherently social animals. We haven't gotten where we are today because of social darwinism.
Employment of recreational therapists is expected to increase 15 percent from 2008 to 2018, faster than the average for all occupations. Job growth will stem from the therapy needs of the aging population. . . Employment growth in schools will result from the expansion of the school-age population and the federally funded extension of services for disabled students. [/quote] Oh snap.

The "public workers are robbing the government blind" myth is a...myth. Most positions within government pay less or equal to private companies. People don't "leave for the public sector" to make more money.

Money spent by several presidents in the past. We should all be angry about that.

It's great to see the Tea Party angry, but they're made for all the wrong reasons, and it's sickening to watch them get puppeted by their masters. OWS isn't sustainable. The idea of camping out is great, but it's too fringe of a protest. People have to take care of children, work, and we have financial liabilities. The TP doesn't have that problem. They can show up, rally, and go home the next day. They are more of a recruiting drive to pick up minions, where-as OWS is an actual protest--just an unsustainable one.
I can, and have. My total food costs for this month alone are $104 right now. And I eat pretty good! When I was unemployed for nine months I was given $107 a month in food stamps. I did okay and was even able to stock up some. My mom is 84 and her income (SS) is a little over $600 month, she gets $110 a month in food stamps and gets by. We both buy cheap and 'on sale', nothing fancy but we don't buy processed foods either. I skip entire aisles in the store...no junk foods or sodas, no deli foods, only frozen veggies in the frozen section, or fresh fruits and veggies, not much in dairy or bakery and I bake my own bread. Granted, I am a single person living alone so it's easy to eat just what I want and don't have to worry about anyone else's 'wants'. Yesterday I bought a $25 roast beef and paid $9 for it on sale. I also bought a rotisserie chicken that will give me about three regular meals and then be made into chicken broth for Chicken & Noodles down the road. It's not hard to eat cheaply but well if you know how. If I got $160 a month I'd eat well AND be stocking my pantry and freezer.
Now that is the smart way to make the food budget stretch. When I was growing up I watched my mother and listened to her how she had limited funds for food , I learned to stretch every dollar and I have a mind set to consider every purchase , if it is a good deal.
