Or ask enough months in advance for the day off. Since the stores were all open last year on Thanksgiving this should not have been a surprise to them.

Christmas and Easter are religious holidays celebrating comic book fictional characters the liberal, hipster crowd denounces. Thanksgiving glorifies the conquering of Native American people.

Let them eat stale Hostess cake. Back to work.

The backlash against the big boxes that plan to open on Thanksgiving is free publicy. Who knows, some big boxes may even encourage it.

Most businesses that are open on holidays mandate a certain number of holidays be worked by each employee. If they didn't, there would be no one there on Easter, July 4th, Memorial Day, Labor Day, etc., etc., etc.

Well sure. They can't give everyone off; that's why you ask early.

My son works in a restaurant. He got off Wed-Thur-Fri. They are only closed Thursday.
But he asked 2 months ago and was the first to ask and got the days off.

If Sunday isn't special and we don't want to have even one day of the week to relax and stay home with families, then what makes any day special?

I'm pretty sure the Walmarts and other stores will know how to make Thanksgiving the biggest shopping day of the year -- all they have to do is offer a few cheap televisions or iPods to the first shoppers and there will be a stampede of greedy customers. Maybe even some greedy customers will be suffocated to death by other stampeding greedy customers. Thursday's just as good a day to die shopping as Friday is.

If the workers don't like it, all they have to do is listen to what Obama said and open their own businesses and close them on holidays. After all -- they won't have to work and save up to make their business, someone else does that for them.

Or work and shop at Hobby Lobby or Chic-Filet where traditions like Sundays with family and holidays are respected.
Not everyone's Sabbath is Sunday.

No one is being forced to do anything here. If people want to stay at home with their family for the holiday, they may. They will probally want to have the elementary foresight to change jobs well before Thanksgiving so that their schedule is free, but it can be done.

I never used the term "lazy" nor did I insinuate that these people were. I stated that they have a choice in how they earn an income - and if they have chosen to make money by working at a place that is open on Thanksgiving, then they should expect to have to show up on that day in order to get paid.
The "choice" is sometimes to work at one of these stores or not work at all. Not everyone has a huge choice in employment. Just sayin'.

Working retail sucks period.

Part of the job is working crappy hours.

I do feel bad for them though, I wouldn't want to be doing it.

True, the real Sabbath is sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, as per God in Genesis.
