I don't really know how food stamps/EBT/SNAP cards work. It seems to be a free-for-all, and you can even get cash back to spend on booze, cigs, drugs, whatever.

Perhaps each qualifying person in the household should get actual stamps marked 'milk', 'fresh fruit/veggies', 'meat', etc. No stamps for pop and candy, etc. How hard can it be to give, say, a 1-gallon for milk stamp per week per person? Plus if the stamps were mailed to a residence, it would be easy to check up on people. If they're getting stamps mailed to a place where they don't reside, they get cut off.

But no, we give out credit cards that can be used for anything. Disgraceful.

I'll bet Martin Luther King would be proud <sarcasm> Welfare leeches must be so proud. They knew they did not have that much on their EBT cart. This is theft. Then when the computers came up. They abandon the full carts. Animals!

I heard so too but I don't believe it. You can't use ebt cards for electronics...right?

No, Walmart is eating the costs of this rather dumb mistake.

I think that SOP for most stores is allowing about 50 dollars in store credit if the EBT system is down.....that did not happen for some weird reason.

If this did happen, Walmart should have put a limit of about $150 or so. Hopefully that's what they did. It's not like they couldn't go back and shop once the computers were working properly.

What happened next is both Walmarts were jammed packed. Entire shelves were cleared as EBT card holders raced to the stores and filled up carts with anything they could grab.

Walmart began accepting the cards on good faith at 7:00 PM. However, at 9:00 PM the balances started showing again. Immediately a woman was caught trying to “buy†$700 worth of stuff with a balance of $.49.

When loudspeakers announced that EBT balances were showing again, dozens of patrons immediately abandoned their carts. It seems the majority of the the people remaining in line were knowingly trying to defraud Walmart. Both Walmarts were left cluttered with jam packed carts. The EBT card holders were simply trying to get more free stuff at Walmart’s expense.

Perishable items left in the carts were ruined.

EBT users abuse generous Walmart to steal goods
A local grocery store (not Walmart) lost thousands of dollars as stuff expired and the frenzy that abruptly ended left so much perishable food in full shopping carts with little staff to put it back in time.

It happened all over the country and not just at Walmart. I talked to a Meijer employee where they lost thousands of dollars of cold perishable food in the frenzy due to people abandoning shopping carts when they heard the proper balances were back and they couldn't essentially steal it.

How would that system win votes? Now with the current system, changing over to your system would lose votes. We use to give out government cheese, government bread, government canned goods, etc...that doesn't get votes. Vote ourselves free things and more than we can deliver as a society...that is what is best, it gets votes.

Then this happen? Am I surprised? No.
Anyone who works doing eligibility for food stamps, can tell you, 80% do not work...and those that do work, are working the system. One real estate agent, collecting food stamps and Medicaid for her family...deducted basically every CENT she earned, as a business expense, thus showing ZERO income...with her leased BMW, cell phone, business trip to Disney...
