If there is no incentive to wean themselves off of the government tit, then these people will be vulnerable their entire lives, fearing the thought of providing for themselves, and in a way, they are voluntarily enslaving themselves to government.

Sounds like a teachable moment.

I hope the EBT program doesn't settle with Walmart because it is 150% Walmart's fault... if you do something stupid, you deserve whatever is coming... I would NOT bail them out... Walmart knew the rules and choose to not play by the rules... they are the only ones that should be held accountable...
Adnittedly skipping ahead a million pages so maybe this has already been said........

Keep this firmly in mind....if you show sympathy and do something compassionate for the poor, you are STUPID
I love it!

Yep, happened at our local Wal-Mart as well. Social Media fed the story nationwide. Another Mom & Pop store was also a victim. Apparently, someone started a rumor that they were going out of business and all perishable needed to be sold right away. Steep discounts on everything else, with EBT having priority. They even took "Going out of business" signs from a defunct store and placed them out front. Store was overwhelmed lines were so long and clerk couldnt watch everyone. Some just pushed full carts out the door and drove away. Cops finally showed up and they had to shut down for 2 days to restock and clean up the mess.

If I have it right, WalMart will have to suck up the loss
When an EBT card user exceeds their limit, they must fork over what is due in cash or put back enough items to stay within their balance.
The computers would see overages as goods paid for in cash and won't show up as unpaid deficits.
(Can't swear this is accurate but I believe it is)

If I write a bad check, my bank doesn't care if I intended to write bad check, they punish me for it by getting their money with a fine attached. That is how they discourage this kind of abuse.

These people are criminals. They will think twice when their EBT cards don't get refreshed until the overcharge is paid off. Those that ran up their cards should be banned from the store for theft if they try to not make restitution.

Would you want to live near people of this character? Would you open a store near people like this?

Sure, some shoppers may have overdone it a little and charged up a few items over the balance on their card. Who wouldn't get excited if someone suddenly offered you free food? But I don't think our society wants children to go hungry.

Kids are not going to starve because their parents could not by food for TWO HOURS. What does a flat screen TV taste like?

This whole story sort of highlights what we've become as a country. People found out there was a problem with the government funded EBT cards showing no limits, and within a time span of only a few hours, the word had spread and stores all over the country were wiped out by people trying to get more than their fair share. Sort of shows you the regard people hold for others at the moment. My own thought process is that the EBT cards used for the purchases are registered to individuals. There are electronic records of what was purchased, and by whom. There should be no balance added to the cards until such time as the amount purchased through fraud has been paid back.

Are you saying that you would have been one of those people with $400 worth of food in the cart trying to take advantage of Walmart because you have only .49 cents on your non-working EBT card? Such an opportunity would have been too hard to resist?

Am I reading that right?
