These posts just get more inane the more they come.

People have been building close to the border between Canada and U.S. before the border was even clearly defined. There are houses built so close that if you cross the street in front of your house you're in another country.

What about this do you people not understand? Whole communities were built along the border during a time of our collective history when the border was merely something on paper. People for centuries freely travelled back and forth with no thought to it. There were no border agents on either side of it at the lesser known crossings.

Another: https://www.canadiangeographic.ca/ar...ad-town-border

As late as the late eighties there was a crossing under Winnipeg Manitoba with a small kiosk and a lift bar crossing the highway that was unmanned after hours. You could drive up get your passenger to lift the bar and drive on through, either direction.

There are examples in recent history where one side would close their office for the night and cede control for both directions to each other as a way to cut manning costs.

Here's an even more graphic example of this phenomena:

And another dating back to 1782 before Americans became so paranoid:

So glad they stopped her so vigilantly, since we all know that Canadians have been lying in wait for their chance to infiltrate! No doubt Canada has some nefarious plan to force better health care on unsuspecting Americans!

They have that discretion granted to them at various checkpoints even a hundred miles or more wasy from the border to stop you and ask questions.

Why bother with the questions if they don't have discretionary powers?

The discretion is to ask questions of those with valid documentation and pull aside for secondary inspection, not to waive documentation requirements. I'll say that a border agent has no authority to let someone into the country who cannot produce any form of identification. Also, a border agent does what a border agent's boss says to do. If these agents were sent out there to bring this trespasser into the office for questions, that is what they are going to do.

I know this border well. There are plenty of homes right on the border. 0 avenue.

She's lucky she didn't accidentally cross the Mexican border. A US marine took a wrong exit and wound up in line to enter Mexico. He had a gun in his vehicle. He was detained 7 months, and tortured.

We should not have allowed any Mexicans into the country after that. The French woman was held for 2 weeks, and let go. Big deal. A few years ago some American backpackers crossed the border into Iran and were held for several years.

See that's where you're categorically going off the rails. Had they done the humane thing and listened to her story, and checked her phone records, they could have easily verified for themselves her story being accurate. Had they taken her to the Canada office immediately to check her story, the Canadian agents would have done the very same thing, checked her cel-phone and called her mother to bring her passport down to them, et-voila all sorted.

You're making up a story to suit your agenda it was Canada's rules preventing American border agents using their freak'n brains instead of their MAGA hormones.
Agree 100 percent.

These US guards used NO discretion and acted like robotic government stooges.

And people have been finding ways to bypass checkpoints as long as man has been around, too.

Bottom line, the agents that live there know all this, know the terrain and the culture, know about the signs or lack of signs, and did what they thought they needed to do.

Well as pointed out she doesn't LIVE near the border. I know this area. It is very easy to cross over without knowing it when on the beach. First off, if you are looking at the US customs station as being on the border, you would be wrong. Perhaps she was using that as a guide?

The actual border is crossed BEFORE you reach the guard station.

Easy to do, especially if the tide is out.

They are using "discretion" on the southern border and look what's gotten us.

Nah. The US overreacted in this case.

It's all fits the plan though. Make Americans so afraid of a shadow, that a 19 year old French citizen, jogging on a beach, who obviously doesn't know the area, which is not well marked on that beach, somehow a threat.

If she didn't speak English, SURELY the US guards would recognize French, and at least take her to the Canadian guard station where there would be someone who speaks French, because it's federal agency. It could of easily been cleared up.
