A perfect example of what is wrong with most Portlanders when it comes to appreciating winter weather. This beats the rain we were getting ANY day! It's a wonderful chance to enjoy the clean peaceful beauty that a fresh blanket of snow provides. Get out and play in the snow with the kids! Enjoy the slower pace that happens when all those who fear the snow stay home! If I wasn't taking of my elderly father this afternoon, that's what I'd be doing!

It's already in the teens here in Wash. County.

If you haven't done so already you should follow these tips. We're in store for a very long cold spell:

1. Disconnect all outside hoses from your faucets
2. Cover up foundation vents
3. If your bathroom has plumbing along an outside wall leave the cabinets doors open to ensure some heat reaches the pipes.
4. Keep vulnerable faucets dribbling to keep them from freezing. (especially if you have a well)
5. Make sure you car has antifreeze style windshield fluid. (many brands sold here offer minimal freeze protection)
6. Be careful of any auxiliary heat sources. (many could have a fire or carbon monoxide risk). Make sure detectors work.
7. Check in on elderly neighbors.
8. Be patient when it comes to any traveling. If you can't drive in the snow or if you vehicle isn't properly equiped then stay home or take the bus.
9. Throw out some seed or bread scraps for the birds.
10. Make sure your pets are properly cared for.
11. And remember that most cold spells here in the PNW ultimately get driven out by rain. And when a new rain storm meets frigid ground temps it usually results in freezing rain. Plan accordingly!! (fuel up and test that generator and make sure you have emergency food and water to last several days)
12. Joe the Plumber might be pretty busy this week!! Have some emergency plumbing supplies on hand to tide you over just in case.

Have a hot toddy and enjoy!!

Wow! And this is very dry snow too. I thought I'd go out and make a snowman with the kids. Didn't happen - nothing would stick together. I had a hard enough time making crude snowballs to throw.

We did just finish making & eating some snow ice cream. It was de-licious.

Ugh, no snow in Battle Ground! I need to live in a place with guaranteed hefty snowfall in the winter.

Any ideas...preferably in the Oregon/Washington area, with evergreens still visible and jobs available? Sigh...yeah...Didn't think so.

I'm glad I'm not living in Portland now, most of the people there can't drive worth a $hit in the snow! This is my first winter back in Iowa and all I can say about the cold weather and snow is "Welcome to the club!"
