i haven't spent any time in ft. meyers other than to hop the ferry to key west or driving to/from the airport. is it nice or mixed? obviously a big(ger) city so it will have its proportional share of problems.

Seems there is always some news of a robbery or shooting in Ft Myers or nearby areas to there. Nothing new there.

It's not news anymore. I've spent enough time in this area since about 1995 to remember when this was not the case.

I remember when they didn't talk about multiple accidents on I-75 and the other roads, especially in Lee County every day on the news either.

When we first moved here we went to Ft. Meyers a couple times a month from Punta Gorda. There were a lot of restaurants to check out. At that point there was very little violent crime in that small city.

The downtown or incorporated city of Ft. Meyers is the area North of Page Field to the river. This area has been worked on to show an entertainment district in the area of Broadway & First. Some Restaurants and lots of bars. This was the scene of the murder known as the Zombiecon on Oct. 17, 2015. It was a shooting where several victims were hit with gunfire.

Ft. Myers has changed a lot over the last 10 or 15 years. Not nearly as user friendly. But certainly no Chicago , Newark or New York.

I rarely leave the house without my 9mm. PGI is a very safe area which is why we move here. Still, you never know. I would rather that I never ever need it.
Wow, really?

I go jogging all around town without a thought. We all have a significantly higher chance of being stricken by a health condition or bolt of lightning than life threatening criminal activity.

True. And if you have a medical condition you can take medication; in a thunderstorm seek shelter. Both are forms of protection. Why should a form of self-defense be any different? They are all tools to aid in self preservation.

In previous posts you have said you were concerned, compared PG to Chicago and have said the PGPD haven't done enough, so why would you be against a person carrying? That person may just save you one day.
