Ha! My ex is a junkie of this one site...they match folks up using some computer gibberish...oh,, "E-Harmony". I have a fear we would be "matched".
When my ex and I were separated, I saw he put up a profile on match. I promptly created a fake one, too, just to test something on him. Sure enough, he landed in my mail box in a NY second.
I've never done online match sites for fear of being matched with someone I know. Hmmm. Could be interesting, though.
I was on OKC a while ago (2 years, maybe?) and got matched up with one of my best friends. He actually called me up laughing because really, we are damn near perfect for each other but there is absolutely no romantic energy or interest in either one of us for each other.
It's not a meatmarket, but the people on it tend to be super-flaky in my experience. I've had some success on it, as a have some friends (one of whom was in a 4-year relationship with a girl he met there before he ruined it), but it's still online dating.
I think that online dating, no matter what, will gain a windowshopping/meatmarket component, because unlike in real life where you meet people and are get to know them, their personality, etc., you purport to have a snipped of "everything" laid out there for all to see. It makes it really easy to go,
"Ooooh! He's six feet tall... he has black hair and blue eyes... he's in great shape... he loves dogs... really active! Wow, all the pics are of him out running and biking and surfing! But... he likes metal and says nothing about jazz... prefers beer to wine... and he's an accountant... sigh. Nevermind."
