I think he means well, but it's still horrible advice to those struggling. I've also heard plenty of times that "God only helps those who themselves". And if you aren't trying to pursue on your own, well, you really aren't helping yourself at all.

Not exactly sure how to handle bringing up exclusivity, no situation has ever progressed that far in my case. That might be a problem.
