I read the other day that the South Carolina attorney general was considering charging them with some criminal violation - under SC law, if craigslist was found guilty twice, I believe the CEO would face a mandatory minimum 1 year prison sentence.
Pretty interesting read. If anyone has used craigslist you know it is loaded with prostitutes openly offering their services in the erotic section. The new section they have to replace it will be called adult services and will supposedly will only be for people offering legal adult services (whatever that means). The article does note that this could to the prostitutes just moving to less regulated areas of the site, such as the casual encounters. Which, if you ask me, is exactly what is going to happen.
However, an interesting question is we already have the laws in place to stop prostitution. Prostitution is just like the war on drugs. We bust people for selling drugs so why don't we just start busting prostitutes for soliciting illegal services? Seems like by having them use craigslist we know where they are offering their services, start by doing undercover operations to stop them in their tracks. If someone was selling drugs on craigslist, we wouldn't go after craigslist, we would go after that drug dealer. We should do the same for prostitutes.

Indeed, it has been argued that the internet is revolutionizing -- mostly for the better -- the sex-for-money business. The need for women to have exploitative pimps is diminishing, the corrosive effect of street prostitution on neighborhoods and cities has lessened, the privacy the internet affords both the provider and her john benefits both parties. It's not all a bed of roses, of course (what is?). But the internet may be helping to remove or obviate some of the real problems associated with prostitution while at the same still allowing women to make money with their bodies and horny men to get satisfaction.
Going after the prostitutes won't work, and doesn't. There's a multitude of reasons why whoever goes into that business does. That and there's been multiple cases at least in Seattle of cops looking the other way for "kickbacks" of the physical kind, even in one case where a cop repeatedly coerced an underage prostitute into performing sex so as not to arrest her.
What should be done is go after the Johns. Dry up the money well, the horses go away.
