God doesn't tell people how to do the right thing. In fact there is nothing in the Bible for doing right: except Being Righteous and fine upstanding. Doing right is the problem of the devil and man trying to do as good as the other, which is important if you need to make a lot of money, or satisfy your lover and friend.
The Bible has a lot to say about doing the right thing, yet doing good works will not earn you salvation or eternal life.
Ok, what does that make me then? I was raised Lutheran, baptized, confirmed, the whole nine yards. And then i realized that my faith was not my own, began to think for myself on such maters, and the more i thought about it the more i didn't believe. And here i am now, an atheist, or am I not realy an atheist because i was once "god's child"?
God's children follow Him, those who do not love Him go their own way.
It has to do with the size of the offense. God is immeasurable and eternal. An offense against him is likewise immeasurable.
So it's all about ego, in other words. "You better worship me or I'll zap you into eternal hellfire and damnation."
What's the eleventh commandment-- Thou shalt have no wire hangers?
You may have been baptized, confirmed, gone to church, but did you ever ask Jesus into your heart and forgive you of your sins, did you have true repentance, a real relationship with Jesus? If your answer is no, then you never were a child of the King.
Oh yes, I even vaguely remember when i prayed for such forgiveness. But I never felt changed or different at all, I knew that I was still accountable for my own actions and that god had no part in them. If i had to narrow it down I would say two things lead me away from christianity. First, it was never my choice, never my religion. Second, as my mind grew there was no more need for religion. And that, in fact many religions can hinder that growth.
But this is only my personal story, I'm sure its not the same for every one.
