Unfortunately this is true even without remote work. My spouse used to be on call 24/7. I don't miss that job! They would have to go into the office when called in. Always fun when it happened in the middle of the night during a snowstorm. Can't say I miss those days.

How do you know what our work hours are? Maybe we're on lunch. Maybe we took the day off. Maybe we are taking a sick day. Maybe we work overnight. Maybe we're on the other side of the planet where it's not business hours. Also all retirees have not stopped working 100%.

I spent a decade having to be available 24/7, and it sucked. That decade of my life sucked. But sometimes I would run errands during the day....

You rebel! Shopping in the middle of the day! Oh the horror! I have to go clutch my pearls.

People have brought up companies paying for the WFH employee's internet and things like that.

We get $50/month for added utilities costs from working at home and have been since mid-2020. We also have a full computer set-up and printer provided for home.

My (former) school system tried to cut teacher salaries when classes went on-line. That attempt ended when the Association asked, quite innocently, if Central Office drones would also be cut.

My son works at his home office and he is definitely doing his job. The family isn't allowed to disturb him unless it's urgent. If he wants to take a walk during the day he can, as long as he gets his work done.

Now that gas prices are so high it's great that so many people no longer need to commute.

That being said, I do miss shopping in the relatively empty stores during the work day, especially right after 9am. Oh well.

I didn't bother to read your links.

Personally on my last job working remote for a company in Arizona, I simply told the CEO I would take an annual salary of $X and he agreed. That was the extent of our negotiation. I didn't add "... plus $50/month for WiFi access, and $200/month for cost of living difference between LA and Arizona..."

Also when I moved from California to Alabama to work for the government, the government didn't offer me a pay cut because Alabama is so much cheaper to live. Now I recognize other companies could have as a negotiation tactic. But you could also refuse to take the offer.

Your comment about the government is interesting in light of this:

Although you likely won't read it, either.

My job moved me from San Francisco to Tennessee. I’m still being paid San Francisco money.
