Its all fun. I bring out-of-towners to Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf and they have a ball. Its what they're expecting.

I actually love the cable cars, especially at night when the streets are empty. Also, a lot of locals use it for transportation too. However, if I stood in the mile long line at Powell Station, I'd be pissed lol. When I'm feeling generous, I'll go to the back of the line and tell people, just walk a couple stops up Powell and you'll be able to hop on within 3 cars.

I'd say the most overrated tourist attraction would be...the Duck Boat Tours. I didn't realize it was for tiny kiddies lol.

I love the cable cars as well, they are certainly charming and uniquely San Franciscan, but I can't say I've ever ridden them. Are there really "a lot of locals" riding the cable cars? For $6 a pop with no transfers and always a line to wait in? I haven't met anyone here that takes the cable cars even on a semi-regular basis.

Also, just an FYI for any potential tourists reading this - the "walk a block or two up the street and hail the cable car from the next stop to avoid the line" trick doesn't always work. Every guidebook or travel website around makes that suggestion, so its no longer this exclusive, secret tip. Case in point - yesterday on my running route I saw people trying to hop on the Hyde St cable car at the corner of Bay & Hyde. The cable car went right past them. A half hour later as I was crossing the same corner on my way back and saw the same lady still waiting there, and watched another cable car pass her without stopping.

Locals do ride it regularly, but only those who live near a line and who already have fast passes/clipper cards (which makes the ride free, instead of the ridiculous $6). As an SF native, i've only ridden the cable cars twice in my life. First as a kid when my family was showing relatives around the city, and another time more recently when i hopped on near powell/market with my fast pass, and used it as my method of getting to In-N-Out

My vote for most overrated is Lombard street. It's just a street. And it's not even the most crooked in SF anyways. I actually like Fisherman's wharf/pier 39 though. I can only take it in controlled doses because massed tourists and tourist traps gets old, but i like it.

Ahhh....okay, I could see maybe using it on the California St line (where there is typically little to no wait) if you have a monthly pass. I don't use MUNI enough to make a monthly pass worth the money so I didn't realize the cable cars were included in the price of that pass.

I have a Clipper Card I use primarily for BART (but also the occasional MUNI ride). I always thought it would be cool if they set it up so if you had your Clipper Card registered to a valid San Francisco address then you'd only get charged the normal $2 fare.

I've visited only three or four times so do not know much but the worse was Haight Ashbury. With its history I thought it would be cool but it was evening and it felt very dangerous.
