Not interested in promoting one position over another here with regard to FW area ... just sayin:

I’ve been going to FW literally since 1966. Never get tired of it ... for many years living in the marina, walking / bicycling Ft. Mason to FW, all around the Marina Green, GGB, Presidio ... never failed to be better than watching tee-vee ... people, including tourists, are a fascinating hoot. For me, those areas are essential soul of the City.

Another one is the Exploratorium. Just like Hard Rock Café, they moved it to the tourist trap area. I used to love going to the Exploratorium when it was at the Palace of Fine Arts. I also recently heard in the news that one of the last Fortune Cookie Factories is closing up in China Town. That's totally a bummer. I remember going on a field trip in elementary school to that place. It was one of my most favorite places to see at that age. To us (2nd grade) it was almost like going to the Willie Wonka Chocolate Factory, but for fortune cookies. Sad that it may be gone now. Who wants to bet that they eventually move the Fortune Cookie Factory to the tourist trap area?

Also the antique/vintage game room that was at once, for many years, at the original Cliff House. Again, they moved it to the tourist trap area of the city. I loved when it was at the Cliff House.

Is this more then just a coincidence that the city leadership have moved everything into the tourist trap area? I don't think so. Bring it all to where the tourists are.

There's still the Cable Car Museum, near Chinatown. And I agree about the Exploratorium and the PFA. But at least there's an Exploratorium. Probably, local kids and teens don't mind that it's at the pier. They can spend an afternoon there, and going over to the Ferry Building, and enjoying the whole Embarcadero area. All easily accessible by BART, too, for East Bay kids. The PFA was time consuming to get to, on city transit, after crossing the Bay.

One of my first jobs as an adult was in San Francisco. I had just gotten back from living in Japan for a number of years when I started that job. I was very happy to be there because from where I worked, I could see the Bay Bridge. And living years in Japan, I'd see pix of the Bay Bridge in magazines and such and now it was right there in front of me. The job was ok but the boss made it terrible. I loved getting to work early enough to spend a good half hour to forty-five minutes walking around before I started in the morning. Lunch time was one of my most favorite times of the day. So many different places and types of food to choose to eat. The area where I worked and walk around is all gone now. I was working in a building on Harrison between 9th and 10th streets. Can't even hardly recognize that place anymore.

Tourists, yes - but contrary to ‘perceptions’, I personally find the atmosphere, views and feel of it energizing in its own way (and tourism brings a lot of money here). That said, I’m not stating it’s somewhere I go regularly - but I don’t avoid it, either. It has a feel that is unique (and quirky) to SF which you simply can’t experience in any other city in the same way, good or bad - so in that sense, it’s an integral part of living here.

The entire Bay Area is filled with tourists (not just Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf) for that matter; it doesn’t take away from the City’s vibe, uniqueness, the Bay, or the natural beauty. In fact, tourism is a part of that ‘vibe’. Like it or not, Pier 39 and the GG are definitely ‘iconic’ images of the City.

I live in the bay area and I agree about the "vibe". It's still a special place with tourists and all that comes with it.

All the chatter in the thread about biking from Fisherman's Wharf, I've never done that but I have walked it many times and walked across the Golden Gate too.

Yeah. About ten or so years ago, I got this temp gig in that building that was featured in the beginning of Dirty Harry, the one where Inspector Callihan goes to the roof and finds the note left by Scorpio. The view from the top floors of that building were absolutely breathtaking. And it was the first time in my life I actually looked at the city from that vantage point. It was incredible to say the least, looking at the Golden Gate Bridge, over the Bay Bridge and towards the south bay in just one sweep.

I believe the building you are referring to is 555 Cal, the old Bank of America building. Also, the one with the pool, where the girl gets shot (by the sniper from 555 Cal) is the Chinatown Hilton.

Yes, 555 California.

You may find this video interesting. The old Dirty Harry scenes are the sites and sounds of how San Francisco used to be up until the late 80's/early 90's.

The same guy who created that video above also did scenes from the movie "For A Few Dollars More" which is even better than the Dirty Harry video, since the town sets in the movie have actually been preserved. I believe they are located in Spain. Enjoy
