Insomnia Cookies were in College Park about 10 years ago. Located in Terrapin Station retail strip. It lasted for about a year. The store was open very erratic hours. I suppose the concept is good, as it works elsewhere.

The Kiplinger property is one giant step ahead toward redevelopment, thanks to a Planning Board vote last week. The Board backed a detailed site plan that shows 352 units on the 11-acre tract, located in the southwest quadrant of East West Highway and Editors Park Drive and a short walk from the Prince George’s Plaza Metro Station. Fore Development is the contract purchaser of the multi-family side of the property, while NVR has the remainder under contract for townhouses. Kiplinger used the property for a printing press and warehouse in the old days, but now it’s ‘transit oriented development’ and that means living quarters.

Redesigned, ‘The Hotel’ Wins OK

Three stories shorter, but with a few more hotel rooms nevertheless, The Hotel at the University of Maryland appears back on track.

Federal Aviation Administration concerns that the hotel was too tall for the nearby College Park Airport sidetracked a site plan for the project and forced developer David Hillman, CEO of Southern Management, into a redesign. Hillman cut three stories off the previous iteration of 13 stories, but found space for another five hotel rooms in the newly-redesigned building.

The Hotel will include a conference center, and for University officials amounts to a first step toward establishing the long-sought ‘East Campus.’ Other than the FAA, there is little official opposition to the building. The Baker administration supports it, and the County Council backed legislation that allowed grading to begin early on a property used most recently for the University’s greenhouses.

Meanwhile, College Park Airport still holds the record as the longest continuously operating air field in the world. Wilbur Wright actually taught flying to army pilots and continued to refine his ‘flying machines’ at the airport. He just never thought of putting a hotel there.

The Hotel at the University of Maryland complex to house restaurants, spa - The Diamondback : News

For junior Joe Palazzo, bringing any restaurant with authentic New York pizza or bagels to fill a void in College Park is a plus.

The civil engineering major and New York native, along with all university students, will have access to these goods when The Hotel at the University of Maryland brings four new businesses with it when it opens in January 2017, city officials said.

Franklins Oyster Bar and Grill, Potomac Pizza, Bagels ‘n Grinds and Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa all will have locations in the building. Potomac Pizza and Bagels ‘n Grinds are both local brands managed by Restaurant Zone Inc.

“Maryland bagels are worse than the pizza,” Palazzo said. “The bagels in Maryland make me proud to be a New Yorker.”

The opportunity to bring authentic New York pizza and bagels to College Park — specifically underneath The Hotel — will be a perfect fit for the city, said Adam Greenberg, Restaurant Zone president and founder.
“This hotel and conference center is the best location in all of College Park,” Greenberg said. “With the amount of traffic that the hotel will produce, that will give us a good baseline. With all the students, professors, residents and other businesses around, we think it is a home run location for all aspects of our business.”
