GM plant redevelopment plan brought to residents | www.ajc.com

Looks like Doraville is issuing bonds to pay infrastructure for the site. Good, but I think a TAD like was done for Atlantic station would be better.

Default How Doraville's GM Site could Become a Walker's Utopia

In a fascinating article titled "Assembling a City," The Architect's Newspaper picks the brain of the chief designer behind the planned redo of Doraville's General Motors Assembly plant.

I understand one of the city of Atlanta's chief planners moved up to Doraville.

Until I read the article, I just couldn't understand what they were talking about with "Walker's Utopia." For some reason, all I could think of was Johnny Walker.

(I must have seen some ads lately. A bottle of whiskey usually sits in the pantry for about a decade in our house).

Eckstut's firm, Perkins Eastman, has designed large-scale mixed-use projects around the world — modern housing in Shanghai, Baltimore's Inner Harbor East and New York's Battery Park City, to name a few — so the pedigree seems encouraging.
Sounds really nice. Glad they can use this dead space and take advantage of this MARTA connection.

Was there never a connection from the GM plant to the station?

There is a staircase that lets out the street (not sure of the name) that runs in front of the old plant. This new connection will be more along the lines of a bridge like the one in Buckhead that goes over 400.

The street you're thinking of is Motors Industrial Way. It's a nice way to get from Peachtree (Industrial) to I-85 without all the crushing morning traffic.

Also, I can't help but wonder if between the GM project and the project at the old Kmart site on Buford Hwy., there are any plans for turning the Buford Hwy./Peachtree Industrial area into a massive mixed-use oasis.

"Oasis" might be too generous a word to use for anyplace on Buford Hwy

Okay, at present it's not even close to an "oasis". I was just thinking about what could happen in the future.
