I live near this area and work even closer to it. Buford Hwy is a bit of a diamond in the rough.

I'm not really sure what to think. Too much attention might destroy what character still remains in Doraville and north Chamblee, but there are areas that could definitely use some new construction.

thanks. It gets very hard to get excited about places like that now, as they are so common. But I guess that is a good thing!

Gwinnett County's officials are out of touch with what is going on in the metro. This shows that the older, white, conservative voters still run many of the suburban counties, even though the populations are diversifying.

You could say the same about DeKalb and Fulton, just change the white and how you define conservative.

Gwinnett Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash has so far rejected the idea of a referendum on mass transit, saying she does not believe it will pass. Nash did not respond for comment.

As a Gwinnett county resident, I have to concede that this might be the dumbest thing I have read ever.

Isn't the whole point of a referendum to SEE if it will pass or not?

Can politicians really kill votes based on their idiotic thoughts that they won't pass?

Yet those two counties have rail and MARTA so your point? Clayton also just got MARTA which is mostly black so blacks aren't the ones who have a problem with transit and paying the penny tax.

His statement was a lot more sweeping than just transit.

Politicians stuck in their ways, out of touch with the metro, refusing to change the way things have been done ("conservative"), not understanding the area is changing and is not just mostly Black with some Anglos, but is rapidly diversifying. Gwinnet's probably a lot more in touch than DeKalb, Fulton or Cobb. Its the fastest growing of the 5 core counties.

And there's certainly a reasonable debate as to whether rail is the best way to do mass transit OTP.
Don't think there's a good argument that having a dozen different transit agencies is the best way to do it, but there are control issues when you join a bigger group.

The embolden sentence right here just nullified your entire argument. How is Gwinnett suppose to be more "in touch"? If your elected leadership doesn't reflect your demographics and/or substantive position on issues of the majority then you are clearly out-of-touch with reality.
